Re: sat nav?

Although Im not an accountant I have been self-employed in one form or another my working life and the advice generally seems to be that if you can reasonably justify to yourself that an expense is necessary for your business then you can claim for it. If you are investigated the IR might not share your opinion but the worst that can happen in this caes is that you pay the relevant amount of tax on it. If they find that there is no way anyone could reasonably consider it necessary to the business then a) you pay the tax on it and b) a bit extra (fine) for being cheeky. An example of this would be a diamond-encrusted, gold-plated gearknob!
However if you use a business asset for your own use as well (as i imagine you would with satnav) then only a proportion of its cost can be considered for offsetting against tax, the same proportion to how much you use it for business. Ie if you use it 50/50 business/private then I'd claim 50% of its value.
Anyway like i say im no expert and all that is just my understanding (ie check with someone who knows!)
I got a navman satnav from homebase £135 and works fine, why pay more

I use a Garmin street pilot 3. Its portable smile so I can use it in any of my vehicles and of course Its not on display when I leave vehicle,    it uses a "bean Bag" to stop it sliding about on the dash. Good mapping and very accurate.

Re: sat nav?

Maybe its just me but I find a good road atlas at the breakfast table and road signs are enough to get me where I want to go. How can anybody get 'lost' in this country? They are IMHO surpluss to requirement. The only people that benefit from them are the people that make them, and people that sell them. wink

Re: sat nav?

Maybe part of the driving theory test should cover navigation. That way we wouldn't have to ask sheep for directions or scream down phones. If you can't use an atlas and road signs then you shouldn't be able to take your practical test.
I cover this in my pass plus course. However not everyone does a pass plus.

Re: sat nav?

There was a time very recently...where i was lost in the depths of Wiltshire...on one of those tiny B class roads...i had missed the turning i should have taken, couldn't turn around the road was too narrow, there were no road signs,  neutral

The sat nav had crashed, and the thing with maps is, if you dont actually know where you are then you cannot navigate yourself out of it or back on route! :?

So i rang the person i was visiting......"im lost i says"...."where are you?" she says...."i dont know? on a lane...."....do you have any landmarks? what have you passed??"......"erm", i say "passed a garden center sign"....hysterical laughter down the phone!!...No bloomin idea where i was!....So I rebooted the sat nav and it then got its head together and re-navigated me back on track!...Bless! lol lol Trust me that did actually happen.... lol lol

Im sure they arent everybodys cup of tea, my hubby doesnt really like it, it irritates the pants off him! But i feel just fine with it, and i wouldnt be without it now. Ofcoarse if id never had one...i wouldnt care either way! 8-) 8-) 8-)

Re: sat nav?

My bloke is always down loading info onto his TOM TOM and I have no idea what he's done, but some how he's managed to stop the memory card from working - so yes I feel lost without it as well.

Men and gadgets - will they ever learn - don't fiddle with them!!!!!!!  Mind you it's good in a way cause at least I don't have to listen to that filthy woman telling me what she is going to do to me if I don't turn right. (he downloaded some sort of porn star - I personally preferred the Homer Simpson one).

Re: sat nav?

Anything from the TomTom range is spot on. Comes with a bracket to stick on the screen, but always remove the bracket when you leave the car 'cos the local oicks will know you've put the device in the glove box or under the seat!

If you want hands free then get the posher version, otherwise the standard one will do everything.

If you want/need a PDA thingy then go that way, but for ease of use ie. no buttons, all touch screen, then you can't beat Tom.

Had mine over a year and don't leave home without it.

Keeps the kids quiet in the back as well..........

Re: sat nav?

LOL....mine stutters occasionaly, i love it..makes me laugh so much. And when i have had enough of it i have to confess i do talk back to it!   Shame!

There are so many good points and bad points to them. Its personal preference isnt it? I like them myself.....but i know plenty that dont.

The most irritating thing is when its telling you to go a way you have no intentions of going! lol

Whilst coming back from Hull on Monday night, mine continually tried to direct me toward Manchester, over the Penines!  :oI had no intention of going that way and bolted off down the M18 and onto the M1.....past Derby , my sat nav was hissing and pouting at me!..love! but i kept it turned on to navigate me around Derby.....I mean who ever planned that inner and outer ring road wants punching! A complete shambles it is...lol

Mine is a Nav Man PDA thingy...its touch screen???..no buttons really???? Tom Toms were just too bulky for my liking!..I find with the Nav Man it fits in the pocket or handbag and comes with me, so i dont have to stash it in the car. big_smile

They all have their own pros and cons....

Re: sat nav?

Why do you need to know where you are to be able to use a map? Thats the difference between people who can and can't.
I once used a Sat-Nav device in the channel which went wrong. I didn't know where I was and I could see no land. With a bit of know how and a chart I found my way to the French coast and missed my chosen port by a mere half mile. If I can do at at sea with no land marks anyone else should be able to do it on land. I very rarely use technology at sea now. Always use charts, tables, Sun or stars and compass.
On land always use a map. They can't go wrong.

Re: sat nav?

Tomtom (pros & cons):

+ User friendly
+ Easily updatable (eg. Adding the new Speed camera databases, Points of interest etc)
+ Customizable(eg. Funny voices)
+ Available on PDA's/Smartphones aswell.

- Cannot record routes! (useful for test routes)
- Drains its own battery (that might be a sat nav thing in general)

Everything looks dull..................Until you open your eyes!!

Er cost for starters.

Also people will be so reliant on these things that they will be helpless when they go wrong and yes they will go wrong. They are like TVs, PCs and the like after a period of time they will go wrong. How will you you find your way to your families houses or take the kids to school in your 4x4s. Oh and you'll never be able to find Tescos.
