Technique?

Do you have any special techniques when teaching?

I have recently started to teach my pupils to go 1st 2nd 3rd then use the brake to slow and then to go all the way back down through the gears to get them used to moving up and down the gears.

So what I'm asking is, do you have any special ways of teaching or getting the point across?

All thoughts appreciated.

Matt

Re: Technique?

That sounds good.
"Special" techniques - that would depend on what they need to learn/understand.
Each pupil comes with different, sometimes massively different needs, knowledge and understanding. Without using the "c" word, our skills are at their height (of special techniques) if the pupil's lack of understanding and apparent ability are turned around (and learning takes place) by some magic words and/or by demonstration.
Examples:
- pupil fails to take off steering early enough to end up going where he/she wants to go.  "Magic words":  if you were filling up a jug of water brimful without wasting any water, when would you start turning the tap off?  So it is with steering.
- how does the clutch work, why does the clutch go down to remove the link between engine and wheels?  Stand on a slight incline, engine off, in first or reverse, handbrake on.  Remove h/b.  Depress clutch and back up. Before each action ask what will happen.  Engine on, in gear, clutch up, biting point, snatch and stall; ease up to holding point, up ... And back down a mm.  Find where it is held, moves forward, falls back.

Would you care to share some rhymes?
