Local associations - Do you attend these?

Hello all!

Just seeing how many of you attend your local association meetings?
From the feedback we have been given by our instructors already registered, it seems the amount attending these is getting lower and lower.

Would you prefer to socialise and discuss in other ways like these forums or is this something that you don't feel is needed?

Look forward to hearing the feedback.

Thank you!

Re: Local associations - Do you attend these?

Some local associations are so boring they are never going to attract new members.  After a day's work who wants to go and sit there for an hour listening to minutes of the last meeting being read out, or that the association now has £42.74 in the bank?.

My local association has been going for 15 years, is run by the same officials who founded it, and  does not record minutes.  It's a place where members turn up to hear the latest news, discuss local issues and problems, and have a chat with colleagues.
It's a good place for newbies to get to know the local competition and pick their brains.

Re: Local associations - Do you attend these?

I attend local meetings but prefer forums as they give wider less parochial information.
Personally I don't find them that much use for me, but I am sure they are to others who are less informed.

Re: Local associations - Do you attend these?

At present we have a Test Centre that is threatened with closure and removal to a less
desirable place for which to take a test.

All in the interest of saving money. The Examiners don't want to go but are not allowed to join forces
with the local Association to fight this. It is left to us Committee members to rally the members and pupils
and parents to the fact that this move will cost them a hell of a lot more in either tuition or travelling time and costs to meet the ADI in town.

I guess it's just one of those things. Trying to think up of interesting things to get ADIs to come together.

Facebook has it's moments but just lately they have descended into bickering and falling out over silly topics and oneupmanship.

Re: Local associations - Do you attend these?

But Autax there are some whom will benefit from the move to Poole.
So not everyone is against it.

It actually makes sense as the Bournemouth Centre is a disgrace although the access is good.
It is some years ago when the same argument was made when they closed Poole Centre in favour of Bournemouth.

Re: Local associations - Do you attend these?

Yes, it might benefit those living near Poole but what about those in Christchurch, New Milton, Ringwwod, verwood and Alderholt? It would take almost an hour to get there and an hour back not to mention traffic holdups and roadworks, tourists and collisions. Who is going to want to do or afford 3 hour lessons?

They are the ones that will loose out and when you consider the amount of people in those rural areas it is they that are being let down.

The area where they are planning to relocate to is not very suitable for tests either. Wouldn't you rather take your SN pupils to a place where the test starts off relatively quiet and gets busier rather than be thrown onto a dual carriageway or down to Fleetsbridge right from the start?

The only reason that the building is a disgrace, as you put it, is that there have been some building problems with the ingress of water beyond the control of the DVSA. At least there is a toilet at Bournemouth. Some test centres don't even have that.

It was some years ago and there wasn't the traffic chaos then that we have now.

Re: Local associations - Do you attend these?

The move of Dorchester TC to Poundbury did not cause any problems a couple of years ago,
even though it did increase the time it takes for the likes of me to get there.
Admittedly it is a beautiful centre and another reason I use it.

True it will be busier to start off in Poole, a bit like Dorchester straight onto the bypass roundabout.

Not sure the DVSA will consider that as a valid reason.

I will be interested to hear what the against views are at the meeting,
but I doubt it will change the proposals of the DVSA.
I believe it is still worth fighting for as that is democracy.

For those who think we have gone off topic.
The Local Association has arranged a meeting with DVLA representative to discuss their concerns.

Re: Local associations - Do you attend these?

The only reason my colleague Connie & myself are members of an association is for access to reasonably priced Professional Indemnity & Public Liability insurance, a necessity down here because a large portion of our work is for a government department or under some form of contract, and I'm sure it's the only reason that the others join as well.

Connie & I started off with the local branch of the ADTA - a nightmarish bunch.
None of the meetings provided anything towards professional development, it was mainly infighting & non-constructive $$//@ about the NT's Motor Vehicle Registry, who handle all aspects of car registration licensing and testing.
The MVR is often accused of being dysfunctional and certainly deserves criticism, but surely there's no need for association members to seriously discuss whether throwing rocks onto the roof of a problematic MVR official's house is a good idea or not. I'm NOT joking, it actually happened at a meeting.

I volunteered to be treasurer at one AGM, at the end of the meeting members were invited to pay the annual dues for the coming year - they threw their payments onto my table and quickly departed leaving me alone with a heap of cash & ambiguous cheques on my table - the mess took months to sort out and I vowed never again!
The meeting minutes had nothing much to do with the meeting itself because the Secretary sat apart from the group and typed the proceedings (or her idea of what the proceedings were), onto a laptop as the meeting progressed.

As an executive member I was given a copy of keys to the mailbox, she circulated a letter accusing me of stealing mail, her only reason being that someone other than her was accessing the mail because there was never any junk mail when she opened it (the Mail Centre is in an industrial area so they have a strict policy of not putting junk mail in boxes).
She arranged to have the NT host the annual Australia-wide conference one year, it came as a surprise to the rest of the members because it was never brought up at a meeting and no one voted for it to happen.

Connie & I are now members of the New South Wales branch, but we were persuaded to attend a local meeting – definitely for the last time!
I sat next to an ex-examiner (an incredibly arrogant young man who’s previous job was stacking shelves at a supermarket), he interrupted the meeting to announce his pass rate with the comment that it was better than anyone else (how does he know that?).
He’s a terrible ADI, he yelled at a slightly disabled woman that disabled people are useless and should never be allowed to drive (we know because she came to us after that, and we’ve heard similar stories from others).
I told him to sit down & shut up, he shut his eyes, threw his head back and kept repeating “I’m good ... I’m better than you ... I’m good ...” over and over again.
I couldn’t change seats because the only vacant spot was next to a ruffian known for threatening to stab people, he was in a heated argument with someone and cursing loudly, his obnoxious fishwife partner was assisting him with some of the foulest language I’d ever heard.

The chairman forgot that he was supposed to be chairing a meeting, chaos reigned and Connie & I just got out of there.
Before that the chairman had shirt-fronted me in his home after inviting me on the pretext of discussing paperwork problems, he angrily accused me of spoiling it for everyone by” training to too high a standard”, making it hard for him & others to “sell licences” and make an easy profit.
This was during the period when there was a second attempt at having ADIs do their own testing, again it was a dismal failure and eventually dropped thus relieving the problem of people buying licences like certain overseas nations, and also relieving the “paperwork problem”.

The AANT (Automobile Association of the Northern Territory Inc) stopped endorsing the NT’s subsidised driver training program, and stopped offering free membership to graduates – when I queried the President he told me that the AANT didn’t want their good name sullied by being associated with the questionable activities of the subsidised program, and of the NT driver training industry in general.

Australia’s NT is probably the last genuine “frontier territory” in the western world, like the Canadian Alaska-Yukon Gold Rush & US Wild West of old.
Natural resources (gas, copper, bauxite, gold) fuel a booming upbeat economy, the majority approach is “who gives a stuff? we have a great lifestyle here, we have no cares and there is no need to put any effort into anything” – you only have to read daily letters/texts to the editor in the local rag to get a feeling of the prevailing attitude.

The Yanks would describe the NT as a “gimcrack outfit” i.e. very showy and impressive at first glance, but scratching the surface will reveal complacency, incompetence and corruption at higher levels than normally encountered in Western society.
Thankfully the rest of Australia is not nearly as bad.

Hi Zipper
You would be hard put to get some instructors to travel 20mls for a meeting here, they don't even like going an extra 10 mls to a different TC

Re: Local associations - Do you attend these?

The local meeting Connie & I attended wasn't the NSW branch, it was the NT branch who are unhappy that we and some others elected to leave them go interstate, instead of supporting the local ratbags.
If it was an effort to invite us back to fold by demonstrating what a wonderful, professional & supportive lot the locals are, it was a dismal failure.

The current president branch president is as much as a pain as the rest, an ex-army truck instructor with no training in handling novice drivers, he trades as an "academy" and tells government departments that his outfit is the only one qualified to handle contracts as the rest are mere driving schools.
His academy is down to one ADI (himself) after the others left him.
The Motor Vehicle Registry refuse to allow him to do official disable/rehab work and he's angry about this.
The last instructor to leave the (cough) Academy went to work in a mine, he'd been promising his students they would pass the test after only 5 lessons - an examiner told me his pass rate was zero and most of the learners he presented for tests were quite scary and the ADI was very argumentative (a common complaint by examiners).

We joined the NSW branch through email & occasional phone calls, I don't attend their meetings because of prohibitive travelling costs but we are kept up to date by a regular newsletter, and the branch executive are happy to discuss issues with us via email if necessary.

I flew to Sydney a few years back to attend a disabled/rehab instructor's workshop at Sydney Uni and met the President & Exec Officer for a chat, the only time I have personally visited.
I was treated to a sidewalk cafe meal (the weather was cold and the cafe owner moved the column gas heater closer to me because I was from The Territory).
They wanted to know about the local branch president, the one who'd accused me of stealing mail, apparently they were puzzled about some of her actions.
Afterwards I was ushered onto a bus and put into the care of the driver & his instructor (the bus had other passengers), they made sure I sat just behind them so they could tell me when we reached my stop at the Manly Ferry terminal.

I think the driver was either having a check drive or learning a new route because he drove extremely well, it was fascinating to listen to the instructor (who had a couple of bananas protruding from his jacket pockets) discuss with him on how to handle Sydney traffic.

Previously I had a wild taxi ride from the airport into the city where the taxi driver mounted the opposite footpath scattering pedestrians while turning right, to get around a slow car.
Next day I took a taxi from the motel to the campus, the driver was continually lost and I noticed his photo ID on the dashboard looked nothing like him, he still charged me the full fare though (Aussies don't tip as a rule, otherwise I wouldn't have refused tpp him).
I think the best example of unqualified drivers filling in for their mates on a taxi shift was at Darwin Airport - a passenger asked the driver why he was putting his suitcases in the back seat instead of the boot. Apparently the boot was already "full", when the curious passenger opened the boot he found it full of the proper driver who was having a nap while his mate drove for him.

Sorry about digressing, sometimes I think I should write a book about some of my experiences - but people would think I was making it up.

Re: Local associations - Do you attend these?

Hi John, as Les Patterson once snorted when challenged about the lack of Aussie culture: "Culture? We're up to our a***s in culture!"
The NT is where some instructors fled to after being given a hard time by authorities in other states.
The NT will never grow up, especially NT politicians - the Treasurer has just been forced to resign after making nasty homophobic remarks about a young man.
The Chief Minister was eventually forced to sack a magistrate who is a member of his own political party, after an outcry by the bar association (a good example of an association doing the sort of thing they should be doing).
Some years back a pollie was annoyed about a TV journalist's line of questioning, he grabbed the mike and wrapped the cord around the journalist's throat - in front of the camera.
In most places this would have treated seriously, but down here this sort of behaviour is regard as hilarious, the sort of thing that makes the NT so much fun to live in.

If I wasn't in the NT I would probably attend meetings of the local association, because I'm sure I wouldn't be sworn at by a nasty woman or threatened with being stabbed by her husband, or have to sit next to some moron.
BTW I can't stand Aussie soap operas*, they embarrass me.
*Unless they're being sent up by Fry & Laurie.

You would have done if you had been there. wink

Good informative meeting with an excellent representative from the DVSA.

There is a plan to merge as many centres as possible including Salisbury.
The vehicle testing work of the Old VOSA is not now undertaken at the centres as the examiners go to the work place.
Therefore they are largely unused.

I couldn't make it for personal reasons.
