River Dredging

When I worked as an Insurance Engineer carrying out Electrical Inspection tests on riverside monitoring stations in the '90s the Wiltshire rivers were beautifully clear, mainly being chalk rivers. However one alarming fact was that the Environmental Officer that accompanied me said they were cutting back completely river weed cutting to provide a better environment for the fish and pressure had been brought to do this from fishing clubs.  It fitted in with the cost cutting that was prevalent at the time.

Now some 17 years on we have the worse flooding in Dorset and Somerset in living memory. The River Parrett in Somerset has been drastically narrowed due to river reeds being allowed to take over. Dredging of rivers has been drastically reduced over this period and as such we have rivers that have restriction to their flow rate and drastic reduction in their capacity. Dredging and weed cutting will not prevent flooding but would drastically reduce it.

The Government are planning to spend 87 billion on building a high speed rail link to reduce the journey time from London to Manchester by 20 minutes. 20 minutes can easily be wiped out by a signal delay.

Why in God's name is this money not being spent to improve what we have instead of creating heartache and misery providing this link?

87B today 120B in five years? Crazy

Re: River Dredging

Well just in case there is no one on this forum affected by the flooding or couldn't careless about those that are then take a look at this article from the Daily Express yesterday and learn how, as I mentioned in the OP, the environment Agency have deliberately neglected the rivers for the sake of wildlife and allow the rivers to flood.

The Daily Express Article.

Re: River Dredging

Hi AUTAX
Same up here in the northeast.
I have always lived close to the river Wansbeck in Morpeth.
When I was little the river was frequently dredged to deepen the channels and clear the silt and gravel.
They stopped dredging many years ago and flooding has become alot more prevalent!
There was a major flood many years ago,1963 I think, and they built a large floodwall, but recently flooding is happening every few years and breaching the current defences.
100s of homes were flooded 3 years ago and they are now embarking on a new flood defence scheme.
Many here believe that lack of dredging is a major factor in the increased occurence.

Re: River Dredging

Flooding will get worse. Global warming has affected the weather. Dredging causes flash floods. Some low lying ground will be sacrificed to allow the water levels to rise and fall in a controlled manner. Buy a house on high ground.

Re: River Dredging

Actually, was with a Filipino student today driving back to Rockborne from Combe Bisset and passing flooded fields he remarked that it reminded him of the rice paddy fields back home. If the Government don't do anything to prevent or reduce flooding then this could be a new crop that our farmers could diversify into.  lol  lol  lol
