Is your car fir for purpose?

Dear All

When it comes round to that time in your working life, when you have to let go of your cherished companion (or ditch the bane of your very existence), do you look beyond how the car looks and feels to you?  How many of you dug around to see if the car was suitable as a tuition vehicle?  If you bought from new, did the sales man at the dealer say anything other than "this car is perfect for you"?  What mechanical issues would you cross reference before taking the plunge?

Re: Is your car fir for purpose?

Bearing in mind I operate in the Northern Territory, Australia ...

I always buy a car with tuition in mind - first I search the net for reviews to get a feel for how they "drive".
After narrowing down to a few choices I test drive them:
First I sit in the passenger seat to see if I can view ALL the gauges and warning lights from there* and see how big the A/B/C pillar blind spots are.

I bring my diary and look for how easy it is to store it and my clipboard in storage bins etc.
Is the boot a reasonable size (because of our method of during driving tests down here I need to be able to store 2 to 4 1.2 metre "parking poles" and traffic cones in the boot).
What is the rear seat room like?

I spend some time in the passenger seat with the car salesman behind the wheel (resisting the temptation to direct them and comment on their horrible driving) before I do a test drive from the driver's seat.
I always do a couple of hill starts to get the feel for the clutch and try to get a bit of speed up to get an idea of wind & road noise at higher speeds.
I take special note of how the gearbox feels.

*A lot of our work is done on government programs meaning that the speedo at least must be visible from the left hand seat - I like to see everything.
They also demand a 4-star NCAP rating soon to be upgraded to 5.

My colleague specialises in special-needs & disabled driver training so she looks for things like seat height, door size, how wide the front doors open etc.

Re: Is your car fir for purpose?

Small cheap and bulletproof is my criteria. So far my Mazda2 1.4 Diesel has had 80k of rough treatment without complaint. Mini can't take the abuse, anything French will give you trouble and vauxhalls are just bland and boring. When I look at some instructors cars, I know they bought/leased it for their own pleasure and not as a working tool.
