Motorway limit to 80?

I have absolutely no issue about raising the limit ...
However, when the Minister talks about:
- "a higher limit will reduce journey times". I think "how?" Most travel at rush hours (that's why they are "rush hours") and the last time I looked 70mph was pretty difficult to achieve on most rush-hour m-ways.
- "modern car active and passive safety systems render the 70 limit out-of-date". So, what you are saying is "it's ok folks, have a crash and you'll survive". Maybe it'll come out in the consultation process but I would have hoped for measures to prevent the crash in the first place:
How about using speed-space camera technology as used in Germany (choose to drive at 200 km/hr. and you must have (halve the number) 100metres space ahead. 85m and you get a ticket, 70m and you get a bigger ticket.)  Case of not invented here syndrome?  Such a measure with the current limit let alone a higher limit would make a massive difference to motorway outcomes, safe as they already are.
Furthermore, I trust we will move to having a good weather limit and a lower one for poor weather like the rest of Europe.
SPACE is the key at any speed.
I fully expect to hear someone contributing to the discussion with "why are we messing about with just 80mph, the Germans seem to manage OK with unlimited stretches of m/w" - when you do, listen out for my chucking a brick at the radio or TV.
Of the 12000km of German Autobahn, 45% = unlimited in that there is an advisory limit but none is enforced. IF, as above, this gave Germans no issues road-safety-wise, you'd expect roughly 45% of German Autobahn deaths to take place on those unlimited stretches. The actual figure in recent years has been around 73%. No real surprise, a higher speed differential between the fastest and slowest makes for heavier impact on occasions.
Why is it that the Germans put up with this? 
- the motor industry (Porsche, BMW ...) has massive political clout
- Germans are fiercely proud of their German-built cars and their ability to open them up on occasions.
I hope the consultation allows facts and common-sense to shine through.

I was at a conference last week  where there were some prominent people on the stage. The question was raised and most agreed with the proposed rise.
The main concern of the police was enforcement. The ACPO representative favoured zero tolerance, based on "we've given you what you asked for 80mph limit - but that is now the limit, stick to it".
That means not using the present guidelines of 10% + 2.

Great post!
The most worrying thing for me is the quality of the British roads compared to the Germans. Their road network is designed to handle high speed driving and ours isn't.

It'll only reduce journey times in non rush hour times. If you're stuck in traffic, you can have a 200mph speed limit and it wont help.

I think the limit should stay at 70. Here's why:

Analysis of DfT figures show that 80mph speed limit would lead to 25 more deaths and a 100 more serious injuries. The BMJ (British Medical Journal) say: “It is intuitive that higher speeds will result in more collisions and that collisions at such speeds are likely to result in more serious injuries and deaths, a perception supported by the evidence."

670,000 more tonnes of CO2/yr will be produced if the speed limit is increased.

It costs £1.2m per death on the road when you factor in police, ambulances, hospitals, inquests, funerals, prosecutions, insurance companies and loss of earnings. Plus a lifetime of suffering for the bereaved family. See article in Wales Online

Finally, why bother? Isn't 70 fast enough. It is for me. Besides, who has been prosecuted for doing 75 or even 80? If the limit is increased to 80, some drivers will start driving at 90, and probably get away with it. The government, stretched as it is won't pay for an increase in monitoring and enforcement. 

This will only lead to more misery. I've just added my name to Liz Voysey's petition against 80mph limits on motorways, I'd urge everyone to do the same.
