N Ireland wanabee's 4th attempt at Part 3

Recently fluffed my third attempt at Part 3 with a 4-3.
I understand that, here in N Ireland, we can apply to start again before the two year period has expired and am trying to look at how feasible it would be to do the tests again in Scotland or England. I know that, if I pass, I will have to to turn in the English / Scottish ADI licence, kiss off the £300 and then pay for a N Ireland one but it would be worth it.
Has anyone experience of going this route? Things like where did they do the tests, any paperwork problems, etc.
At the moment I'm thinking Scotland may be the handiest for me with 2 hour ferry crossings. Takes longer to fly with all the faffing about in airports these days. Where are the ADI test centres on the West of Scotland?
Any advice appreciated.
Really want to get this Part 3.

Re: N Ireland wanabee's 4th attempt at Part 3

Hi K100LT. I can relate to your situation. I took 5 attempts to pass part 3 in Belfast.

When are the two years finished for you?

I was able to start again straight away, as I had gone over my 2 years and booked my 3rd attempt before the 2year deadline...in 5 weeks I was through part 1 & 2 again.

Have you considered gaining specialist training like John Farlams Part3 rescue course in ROI. I cant recommend JF enough...he filled in the missing gaps I had in my training and enabled me to get 5-5.

Re: N Ireland wanabee's 4th attempt at Part 3

Hi Jonny. Seen your car around the test area.
Nice to hear I'm not the only one to struggle with part 3.
To start again in NI I would have to wait until next April before I can apply, so it's off to Glasgow I must go.
Just applied for the CRB check on-line so the ball is rolling(again).
Had considered a rescue course but after having spent plenty to get this far and then what it will cost to go to Glasgow, have to draw the line. Besides, I have every confidence in my instructor who you know and I'm not going to embarrass him by naming him.
I had Eddie for the first two part 3's and Donal for the third.
Not blaming either of them for my failure, it was my own fault and both were very helpful and encouraging during the debriefings.
My only comment would be that Eddie's style was quite different from Donal's and that may have made me a bit more nervous during my first two attempts. Just wondered if I had had Donal first, would the result have been different?
We'll never know.
Keep you posted with my progress across the water. May be of help to someone else in the future.

Hi K100LT, There's an ADI Test Centre in Ayr, if you're still thinking of West of Scotland, also handy for cheap flights to Prestwick Airport.  But I doubt if it'll be any easier over here.

Hi Salva. Thanks for the info. Hadn't realised Prestwick Airport is only a couple of miles from the test centre.
I didn't imagine it would be any easier, more a question of being able to start now rather than having to wait until next year.

If you fly, what will you do about a car?

Re: N Ireland wanabee's 4th attempt at Part 3

Well that's it! Booked the part 1 for next Thursday in Ayr. £22 return on the ferry and includes a coach to the centre of Ayr itself.
Checked for flying but no one flies Belfast to Prestwick any more. Besides, it would cost four times as much and with all the faffing about at airports and flight times, I'm not sure I would save that much time.
The admin side has been a bit like the curates egg, good in places.
Unlike NI, much of the work is done online and seems very efficient. The problems arise when you are using a NI licence which requires a special authorisation from the DSA. Many thanks to Claire Jackson in ADI Reg who helped me through it.
You just need to be patient and polite.
Can anyone recommend an experienced ADI in the Ayr area who would let me use their car and possibly show me some of the routes for parts 2 & 3? A charge for this is expected, of course.
Keep you posted.

Re: N Ireland wanabee's 4th attempt at Part 3

Update. Passed part 1 no problem! Long day. On the boat at 7.00am and not back into Belfast until after 10 that evening. Not as long as waiting until next April, though.
Going back to sunny Ayr next Monday, the 8th of August, for part 2. Got a hire car organised for the day for £30 so keeping costs down. Had no problem with part 2 the last time so should be a formality(fingers crossed). Have been out practising.
Organising a car for the part 3 may present one or two more problems. The couple of instructors I rang in Ayr were either booked up for 5 or 6 weeks or weren't very enthusiastic. Maybe finding one for the part 3 may prove a bit easier.

Re: N Ireland wanabee's 4th attempt at Part 3

At last! Passed my part 3 yesterday after attempt No.5. 4-4, although the SE said I almost got 5's. I passed which is the main thing.
Big thanks to Shaun Lidbury who operates in Ayrshire and who let me use his car for the test.
Hasn't been an easy (or cheap) route and I wouldn't recommend it unless you are as desperate as I was. My alternative would have been to start all over again next April in Belfast.
I will be 56 by then and I ain't getting any younger.
All I have to do now is apply for my GB ADI licence (£300) and when I get that, I can apply for my NI ADI licence (£240).
This will take me up to Christmas so I think I will wait until the new year and then take up an AA franchise as has been my plan all along.
To anyone considering the same route I would advise that before doing the part 2, they go over for a couple of days, hire a car and familiarise themselves with the area. There are subtle differences to driving around Ayr compared to Belfast. The test itself may be slightly different.
It might even be worthwhile using a local ADI instructor for a few hours to give you a bit of background. I can recommend Shaun.
Being a bit more familiar with the roads there will help for the part 3 as well.
Reckon on each attempt costing somewhere in the region of £250-300.
Now I can get on with things I'm more familiar with. I have ran my own businesses in the past, so self employment holds no fears.
I enjoy selling and, really, isn't selling yourself what its all about until you can build up your reputation?
Hands up those who just give a price, hand out a card and run away when approached by a potential customer/pupil?
You have got to learn basic selling skills to survive these days.
Thanks to those who gave advice and encouragement and I hope I can contribute back to the forum.
Now, lets get started on that website.

Well done, big relief isn't it? When doing part 3 it's like you have to suspend your life until passed. I think you are right about having to sell yourself and most instructors, myself included probably are not very good at that.  Enjoy your new career  smile
