How long do you need to have held a full driving license before you can train?

I am aware that you need to have held a full license for 4 years before you can start working as an adi after you qualify.  However, is this the same requirement when it comes to registering to take the 3 tests? Will I need to wait until I have been driving for 4 years before I can take the tests? or is this just for when you have qualified? It is not very clear on websites such as deirect.gov.  My understanding is there is a registration process, one for taking the tests and another to for becoming an adi once qualified.  What is not clear is whether or not you are allowed to register to take the adi tests before you have been driving for 4 years or if the 4 year rule applies to both registering for tests and to be an adi after qualifying. I have noticed that some driving schools say you only need to have been driving for only 3.5 yeas (not 4) before you qualify? Surely they wouldnt take you on if this wasnt the case?  Hope this makes sense.

Hi,

As long as you time it ok and the DSA are aware you understand the process you can pass Pt3then wait a year until you register with DSA and working back you have 2 years from the date you pass your Pt1 before you need to pass all 3 attempts, you could take time before this to study for Pt1 so in reality you could apply to start training to be an ADI maybe 6 months to a year after passing your test.

Not sure if I have made that clear enough but the 4 years and 21 yrs is the legal requirement to be on register as either a PDI or ADI working on a badge.

Thanks for your reply, so what you are saying is it doesnt matter if you have not held you license for 4 years you can still train to be an adi and take the tests before hand - as long as you have been driving for 4 years at the time you qualify to be an adi.

Hi,

You can qualify by passing Pt3 anytime after 3yrs holding a licence - once you pass the Pt3 you have up to a year before you need to activiate your Green Badge.

But you must have held your own driving licence for 4 years  by the time you apply for your badge.
