Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

Hi All

I've been studying about client centered training & coaching methods from people like John Farlham, John Whitworth & Carl Rodgers. I'm trying to reconcile these ideas with the current methods of instruction.

I could go into the differences now but I'll leave it for another post after I see the reaction this simple one creates.

Please can anyone enlighten me?

Tony

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

All therapy should be integrative so you adapt your tutoring, teaching, coaching, mentoring methods to the needs of your clients but without specific emphasis on one size fits all.  The problem with non integrative counselling / training as I see it, is that it can be too rigid and does not fit in with every client need. People are so different we need to feel what they need and adapt accordingly.

I think it depends on what and by whom these current methods are. Could you be more specific because
some of us have always done pupil centred learning where appropriate?

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

You might want to look at the Hermes project which look at these issues.  Ian Edwards, one of our directors was on the Hermes project and has written a book on the subject. I know it has already been mentioned this forum but here is the link http://www.edrivingsolutions.com/book.aspx.  In a nutshell the book looks at how to maximise the development of a learners own self evaluation skills.

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

Hi Tony,

Why would you want to "coach" ?

Ref:- What's in it for you ?

Can you list the benefits of adopting coaching ?

Really the questions are for everyone not just Tony.

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

Hi Madiggy/Tony

What is in coaching for your pupil?
Effective learning takes place if the Trainer has a comprehensive toolbox that will fit the clients needs. Coaching is an effective tool to place the learning responsibility with the client.
Coaching pyschology has its roots in good teaching practises and pyschology especially in raising awareness of emotional intelligence not only in the pupil but in the trainer as well.
To make a decision there must be a balanced view. I will quote three definitions of coaching

'Coaching is the art of facilitating the performance, learning and development of another' - a facilitation approach (Downey, 1999)

'Coaching is unlocking a person's potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them - a facilitation approach' ( Whitmore, 1992, based on Tim Gallwey, a tennis expert)

'Coaching is directly concerned with the immediate improvement of performance and development of skills by a form of tutoring or instruction' - an instructional approach (Parsloe, 1995)

There are lots of books available that can help make an informed decision, I suggest try reading some and form your own opinion.

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

I should state for the record I am an advocate of "Coaching".

Many quotes suggest that coaching is a tool for the ADIs toolbox (and I agree). I can see some benefits for some pupils, ie those who respond to one of these methods, (as already suggested to many to develop on here) the number of pupils that would benefit from our chosen methodology would be a small percentage. Does this mean that to reap the instructor benefits we would need to take a course in many if not all the disciplines of coaching.
With respect to those trying to make a living from coaching courses, most ADIs already have a portfolio of teaching/training methods and have the skill to match the method with the pupil. To ad just one stylised coaching method to our toolbox is difficult to justify a five or six day course, when there is evidence our present toolbox is doing a good job.

So my questions stand:-

Why would you want to "coach" ?

What's in it for you ?

My toolbox has got spanners from 20 years ago which I still use to adjust certain pupils with, along with newer ones I  acquire for those who don't fit the existing ones.

My tools are priceless to me, although most have been  picked up free.   I certainly wouldn't pay £600+ for one.

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

Sam old, same old. Most ADI's who think they are coaching know very little about true coaching techniques. Why coach? because it is proven to produce safer and better attitudes than drivers who have been told how to do everything.

Coaching is now used throughout industry, the armed forces, police, many others. The problem with ADI's is, they think there is never anything left to learn once they have a green badge and are either unwilling or unable to learn new techniques. Their response to new learning is to criticise it as a rip off by the provider, this is another way of saying I don't want to do it or can't do it.

The trouble with some ADI's toolbox is they are running out of the correct tools for 2011, they can only fix the problems of yesteryear.

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

Hi Kevin

Sam old, same old. Most ADI's who think they are coaching know very little about true coaching techniques.

How many ADIs have you canvased for this sweeping statement ?

Why coach? because it is proven to produce safer and better attitudes than drivers who have been told how to do everything.

Could you post a link to the evidence that shows coaching produces safer and better drivers, and define better for me.

Coaching is now used throughout industry, the armed forces, police, many others.

Throughout industry, again a very broad statement and I'm sure impossible to prove.

The problem with ADI's is, they think there is never anything left to learn once they have a green badge and are either unwilling or unable to learn new techniques. Their response to new learning is to criticise it as a rip off by the provider, this is another way of saying I don't want to do it or can't do it.

I am a little offended as an ADI that you believe, as stated above, it stops at the green badge.( I assume at this point you are also an ADI) Most of the ADIs I have met, have taken further qualifications since the green badge, admittedly not always related to this industry, but also not standing still. In my 25 years in this industry I have come into contact with hundreds and possibly over a thousand ADIs that I have personally spoken to or carried out further training with.

The trouble with some ADI's toolbox is they are running out of the correct tools for 2011, they can only fix the problems of yesteryear.

The problem with the last statement above is that you have got your facts wrong. to date we have been reducing the death toll and KSI figure, so there is proof for the old methods as you call them. Where is the proof that coaching saves lives and reduces injury, to date there is no hard evidence. IF that evidence ever comes to light, how many of my pupils will need the "New method" and how many will survive using tried and tested so called old methods (that may of course include some coaching).

Any instructor who is evaluating ( in my case, every moment of every lesson and afterwards in or out of another lesson ) is not standing still with their own learning.

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

Hi Madiggy

I too have dealt with 1000's of ADI' after 26 years in the profession, 20 of those years as a full time ADI trainer. I know from years and years of check test training that the majority of ADI's do nothing after passing part 3, in fact there are may who have not got a clue what's going on in the profession, you only have to look at the lack of membership to professional bodies to see why this happens, I see it every day of my working life.

If you want proof of the results of coaching try the Hermes report.

Coaching is now used throughout industry, the armed forces, police, many others.
If you want proof of this do some on line research, these are not statements off the top of my head I have researched it, give it a try it will take you hundreds of hours as it did for me.

.Most ADI's who think they are coaching know very little about true coaching techniques.

Unless you are prepared to take training for coaching you will not have the knowledge or understanding to apply it correctly.

[b]The problem with the last statement above is that you have got your facts wrong. to date we have been reducing the death toll and KSI figure, so there is proof for the old methods as you call them.

The KSI figures are actually highest among new and young drivers (17-24) so the old methods are clearly not working. They may get through a test but it's after that "the old methods" are letting them down.

I stand by my research and personal experience that most ADI's do not want to change as long as they get pupils through the test and make a living.

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

Terrier,

Have you managed to ascertain whether those ADI's that have had no post qualification training are coming from a particular trainer/organisation  who may, indeed, just be encouraging them to pass their ADI qualification to no greater purpose?

If so, it would seem that the alleged problem is as much with the trainers as the ADI's.

Hi,

And so it gets more interesting as this takes the coaching to a higher level ie the coaching of the instructornnot just the student.

So is there a suggestion that training organisations are just teaching ADIs to pass a test like ADIs are just teaching learners to pass a test.

Could it be that the ADI has been given all the information and advice but on passing the test merely reverts or regresses to their own 'expressive stage' the same as learner does - it then depends on their higher level thoughts, feelings and ambitions whether it is a positive or negative expressive phase.

Hence the reaason we have all these debates and opinions coming through.

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

Not taking any sides on debate here I think people should make up their own minds (bit of coaching there tongue). Here is my tuppence worth.

I was taught the rigid Part 3,  qualified then out on your own...... you have all been there.....you make so many mistakes but like everything you improve as you gain experience.

The company that I am with now encourages ADI's irrespective of their grades or how long they have been teaching to try a coaching approach to driver learning. This involves me sitting in on lessons and watching how the Coaching centred Instructors conducted their lessons.
First of all i did not see a great deal of difference but as the lesson progressed i noticed how the student was both encouraged and enthused to interact with every aspect of the drive.
I know i will get both barrels here with "Shouldn't you have been doing that already"? Probably.

If you are taught a certain way then you will mostly teach that way. How many times have we been stumped with the kids home work because we thought " that's not how i was taught it!"

Anyway i liked what i saw which were balanced lessons with both coaching & guided when and where required.
It may not be for everyone but if you are curious why not find an Adi or school who use coaching techniques and ask to sit in on some lessons. I am sure they would be only to happy to help.

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

I had hope this thread would not degenerate so easily, as I wanted to know what any Instructor hopes to achieve with these new tools? But now we are forced to address, the statistical evidence that helps us make the decisions as to whether we should take a course in coaching.

Kevin my back ground and history in this industry is very easy to find, my contact with ADIs has been all over the UK, speaking at many local associations, plus delivering CPD, Fleet, lesson planning, check test booster and instructor training courses. I have always taken an active role in my local association. I have been a representative on the stakeholder board with the DSA and much more.

I admit I do not know who you are or your background are you able to enlighten us ?

If you want proof of the results of coaching try the Hermes report.

I have read this report more than once, and it is just that a report! If you read the detail of the report you will find, that it is based on educationalists, psychologists, road safety experts, and others, application of coaching to driver training. This does not constitute evidence that it works, just that it should work.

Quote from the report:-
The aim of this final report is to create a coherent package from a range of sources
on the subject of coaching and active-learning methods in the context of
learner/novice driver training. It provides the largest background knowledge for
those who want to conduct coaching seminars for driving instructors.

Coaching is now used throughout industry, the armed forces, police, many others.
If you want proof of this do some on line research, these are not statements off the top of my head I have researched it, give it a try it will take you hundreds of hours as it did for me.

This is unimportant i just felt the term "throughout" suggested _ "all", or even every"

.Most ADI's who think they are coaching know very little about true coaching techniques.

Again I ask which discipline/technique/model are you talking about?

[b]Unless you are prepared to take training for coaching you will not have the knowledge or understanding to apply it correctly.

I have and I do, but I strongly disagree with your assumptions about people you know very little about, and statements you cannot substantiate.

I have to ask where you are getting your data from ( although I maybe able to guess ) Below is information from the most reliable source.
It SHOWS reductions in 17-24 Yr old KSIs.

Trends: Reported KSI casualties in accidents involving young car drivers have decreased at steady rate since 1994  The reductions in the number of fatalities were less consistent Killed or seriously injured (KSI)  The reduction in the number of fatalities as a result of young car driver accidents stalled from 2000, but started to decrease again from 2006. The fatality figures fell 22 per cent between 2007 and 2008, from 817 deaths in 2007. This fell a further 11 per cent to 564 deaths in 2009
Compared to 1994-1998 averages, the number of KSI casualties in young car driver accidents was 52 per cent lower in 2009, and the number of fatalities was 43 per cent lower.  There were reductions over time for all types of casualties involved in young driver accidents. Compared to 1994-1998 averages, there were between 49 to 56 per cent reductions in KSI casualties for different casualty types. The greatest reduction was observed for killed or seriously injured casualties who were occupants of other vehicles or pedestrians (other casualties).
Occupants: Passenger casualties of young car drivers were more often killed or seriously injured in an accident compared to car passenger casualties of older car drivers (25 years or older). In addition, car passengers of young car drivers were more likely to be of the same age and sex as the young drivers.

52% is pretty notable I think you will agree.

I stand by my research and personal experience that most ADI's do not want to change as long as they get pupils through the test and make a living.

I also believe there are many ADIs who don't welcome change, plus there are many who stay resistant to change until it is forced upon them or they can see the benefits of change.

This is what led to my question what is in it for the ADI?

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

Madiggy

I don't need to justify my statements, I too have worked the whole of UK and have achieved a very high standard in delivering ADI training and CPD. Giving talks to associations does not mean much, I have heard some of the biggest piles of rubbish ever at ADI meetings.

I think you are just trying to find little points to argue against my knowledge and opinions, I have come across this many times in the past in particular, on ADI forums.

The changes will happen in driver training and as usual you will find the same type of instructors sitting in test centres asking what it's all about six months after something has changed.

You will not change my opinion because I see it and hear it every day, you must obviously work in an area where every instructor is up to date with everything in driver training, well that's not the case in my area and I am not going to debate every little point of my opinion because I know what I'm saying is correct.

Hi,

I am afraid the post degenerated a while ago due to the aggressive tone (deliberate or otherwise) by you Ian and based on my experience I am aware that most instructors I have come across do not and have not continued to develop themselves after passing their qualifying test - I would suggest it is more common than you think.

Bearing in mind the associations for ADIs actually represent a small % of ADIs in the industry and the fact that someone is a member of an association does not mean they actively work to stay ahead of the game I would suggest that only a small % of ADIs do develop themselves sufficiently.

While I am aware that posts and texts can come across in a manner not intended, I suggest you reread some of your posts and reflect or imagine if you were other members reading them, how you may feel or think about it wink

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

I think many ADI's do not want to change, but the onward march of 'you must coach' by some selling a concept for this training doesn't take into account the true benefit or maybe lack of benefit for the ADI, but can come across as making a quick buck on the back of scientific not proven statements. Methodology matters to those who wish to self improve. No self improvement takes place when some are so rigid in their thoughts (that they will not look outside of the box), so not to question and explore the whole process, the why's and the what if's, how can anyone make an independant decision.

I think forum posts are often read in the manner that many choose to read them in, without thinking about the passion and experience behind comments. Debate is about exploration and meeting of the minds, and disagreements as well as patting on the back. That's the advantage of free speech.

Hi Brian I have and always do re-read these threads before I post, I asked a simple question " What is in Coaching for the ADI? "
So far I have only had replies as to the benefits for some of our pupils, and potential benefits to road safety via KSI figures (Yet to be evidenced)
This thread has also seen statements of so called facts (when replying to me) that are unsubstantiated, and when challenged they suddenly become a personal view.
I am confident that if I posted my view as "fact" I would receive similar responses and challenges.
Now your attention is turned to the almost irrelevant, in this thread, associations and proportionate representation of and for ADIs.

Even you mention " I would suggest it is more common than you think." you are as welcome to have your view as I am mine.

The 1st challenging post was #Reply 10, if you read the thread again you will notice I was not the author, but this post had many sweeping statements within, that I then questioned. How does that make me aggressive or attempting to degenerate the thread.

I still want to know what ADIs (including you ) think they will get from becoming coaches.

Re: Traditional training methods verse coaching methods

Hi Ian,

I would suggest that although I had not researched 'coaching' when I started as an ADI in 2002, I was using what I now know are regarded as coaching techniques, having moved away from the basic elements I had been taught simply to pass the test. I personally started with experienced full licence holders doing fleet and advanced driver training before I was more established with learners and I feel it helped me teach and coach my learners in a way that many local instructors were not - many instructors here only did one hour lessons and took students to the test areas, whereas I would travel further afield and frequently conduct mock tests early on in lessons and in totally different areas to where they would be sitting a test. I would ask students to rate themselves, complete their own lesson assessment sheets and ask what they wanted to do? Not many instructors were doing this.

As a direct result of my approach, my business and reputation grew substantially and quickly.

My student centred approach then is evidenced by several things but especially a student I taught in 2003 who is now an ADI with me and doing a coaching course, she has commented several times re 'coaching methods', that that is how she does it and how I had approached her lessons also.

The benefits of looking in more depth at the coaching principles will give me the instructor more of an understanding of different coaching methods and when it may be more appropriate to use or not use them.

It will have the potential to make the ADIs more money and as a result give more stability and security to their business due to the lessons being more enjoyable for the student as they become even more student centred as we move further away from instructor centred and test orientated lessons.

I will also say that 24 of our instructors have completed the DriveIQ product awareness day's training and the one thing that came from that was they wanted more structure and understanding to their own coaching methods - ten then signed up for and are completing the Btec Level 4 course run by Tri-Coaching and without exception it has given all, who were already mainly established instructors a new fresh approach and vigour to their every day lessons and they are getting great feedback from students. And giving the instructor more confidence and awareness of themself and their students.

I may be proved wrong but I believe that the industry will be moving towards a more structured approach to coaching in driver education and it won't do any harm to those moving that way in a more structured fashion sooner rather than later.

There does appear within the industry to be several factions aiming to promote their style of coaching or courses - but the three main ones I am aware of at the moment of any substance are: Tri-Coaching, Ian Edwards E-Driving Solutions and A2om with driveIQ - but the additional one who has some fantastic ideas is Stephen Haley of Mind Driving.

I am certain others will have their own ideas but my opinion is - if these four are the main players in their field - why go anywhere else - for now anyway? So i am working closely with them all and based on experiences, I will be doing more so.
