Driver Assessment

Hi All

Please can you help I've been approached by a friend who has not driven for a few years. He wants help to bring his confidence back.

He has asked me to give him a report I need help as to how to create a good report.

What topics & subjects should I mention in my report.

Tony

Re: Driver Assessment

Firstly I would question why he wants a “report”, what is it he is actually looking for. Just to do a point blank assessment of someone’s driving with 2 years absence from being behind the wheel can only result in a negative session as he is bound to be “rusty”.

He will probably lack confidence in getting back behind the wheel and is apprehensive, many in the same situation often think that they will have “forgotten everything”, it is usually in my experience that they just require confidence building, and this will not likely come from a “report” or written assessment.

However, you could, after a few sessions with you and when he has been back on the road on his own putting into practice your advice, give him an assessment on how he has improved.

Maz.

Re: Driver Assessment

In requesting a report, your friend might be indicating a preferred learning style of checklist, report, theory ...?
So, to regain some confidence even before driving again, how about a read of HC and D: tes ?
Crucially, ask him/her what types of road, driving, situations are of particular concern. Delve in deeper if the first and second answer is "just driving in general".
Use a checklist in 3 columns to assess, develop his/her knowledge, performance, confidence:
- licence, eyesight, vehicle checks (powders), controls (accurate, appropriate, smooth use of)
- A COAST as the central spine of any assessment and development plan, particularly Space and Time in all situations
- systems used and aware of: MSM, IPSGA, Eco, Parking/Manoeuvring.
Good luck.

Re: Driver Assessment

The request for a report is probably to self train, thus saving money on training. Report should therefore include targets, based on fault recognition and analysis. The order of your report can follow the driver faults in priority or follow a known list like the headings on our DL25.

Re: Driver Assessment

Hi,

Better still - get the person to self reflect and do their own report based on what they felt/thought was good and also areas for improvement.

AND include what they need to do to improve their practical skill and understanding.
