Hi All!

Can anyone put me straight. I am in the middle of sorting my briefing out for PST10 Phase 1. On Overtaking do i explain how to overtake on a single or dual carriageway?   roll

Re: OVERTAKING BRIEFING?

both would make sense...... one of the important briefing points is not to overtake near a junction/crossroads plus thinking of what might be ahead.

Three key questions are Is It Safe?? or Is It Legal?? and Do I need To Overtake??

In your briefing you explain how to overtake and then add the specific bits about D/Cs or single carriageways.. In the big scheme of things the procedure is the same but the possible hazrds change.

In my opinion (some will disagree) you arent going to end up doing an OT on a single carriagway through choice on Part 3.. The DE would destroy you if it wasnt perfect.. But yur are training ppls in real life and you have to cover some thing they probably will have to do at some stage and young drivers are at huge risk doing this sort of thing so it makes sense to explain it properly.

Re: OVERTAKING BRIEFING?

Hi Amanda
keep it simple,

Is it necessary? No point considering the other 2 points if it isnt
Is it legal?
Then Is it safe?

Use examples for all the above.

Then MPSL MSM for single and dual.

Think when combining with Anticipation and the one other you havnt much time, but this one will take longest, its somthing you cant skimp on, especially considering on part 3 you may not actually  get to do it. Think of the most impotant points under headings above.
For example get solid white lines in under 'legal'

Use the driving manual as a basis for the reversal of the routine. This is the one thing experienced drivers get consistently wrong, and as Aspyre says is difficult to practice, so a theory explanation is important. Many learners never practice before test on single cariegways for obvious reasons.

Re: OVERTAKING BRIEFING?

Dont go on about everything and waste too much time. Use key points - the rest of the explanations can be done when actually conducting the lesson.
