Linking to Other sites?

Hi

I was just wondering whether anyone links to other driving schools websites outside of their Geographical area, and whether there is any benefit in doing this (for either party?)

This is all fairly new to me, and a massive learning curve as up until 2 months ago I have never had anything to do with Websites.

Take care all

Re: Linking to Other sites?

Yes, there is a benefit in as much as some search engines still regard backlinks from "relevant" sites to be an indication of the "importance" of a website.

Reciprocal links used to be massively important for SEO, now "one way" links are given more weight, but any link is better than no link for SEO purposes smile

If you'd like a reciprocal link to my site, just send me a PM - more than happy to oblige big_smile

Hi,
I believe that also posting on forums etc counts as a link if you put your URL in your signature? But then again i could be wrong ;o)

Re: Linking to Other sites?

Hi,
I believe that also posting on forums etc counts as a link if you put your URL in your signature? But then again i could be wrong ;o)

Yes, links in forum signatures count smile

In fact, all links count to a varying extent depending on where the link comes from.

The thing to watch out for is "no follow" links - i.e.  where the site hosting the link puts a bit of code into the site to tell search engine robots NOT to "follow" the link. So you might think you've got a backlink because it looks like a perfectly normal link and the link is great for human visitors as it works, but it won't do you any good SEO wise if the bots are told not to see where that link leads. It's quite common for links on Social Networking sites to be "no follow" (a notable exception being Facebook "Fan" Pages I believe).

There's no real way of telling whether links have been made "no follow" without trawling through the source code of a website though and even then you need to know what you're looking for...so my advice is when in doubt bung a link on anywhere that lets you and hope the bots can follow it smile

Driver Training Today signature links are beneficial to driving instructors as they are "follow" and this site is very relevant to driving school websites   big_smile

Re: Linking to Other sites?

Links are important but my understanding is too many can downgrade your site ranking and they rate below good textual content. So a site with no links but relevant content will come higher than one with no content and many links. Like the whole SEO topic though we never really know what works and different search engines need different things.

In a nutshell, links from "quality" sites (i.e. "authority" sites on your topic such as other driving school websites) are good. Other links can be good (e.g. some directories which are relevant to your topic i.e. dedicated driving instructor directories) depending on how much the search engines "like" the site which links to you. Some links however can be downright harmful (e.g. paid for links, link farms, indiscriminate link exchange programmes, or from any site which uses dubious (so called "black hat") SEO techniques).

If you link to other schools and the directories I sent to you, that's a good start.

Other good ways of getting links/publicising your site are to use Web 2.0 applications such as a blog (you can get a free blog - for example "Blogger" is straightforward to use and quite versatile) which links back to your website or use Social Networking sites like Facebook, MySpace or Bebo to spread the word about your business. Twitter (a micro blog) is also good. Invite your pupils to follow you or become Facebook fans etc - network yourself. Have a look at my website to see how I use Web 2.0 and don't listen to any dinosaurs who tell you it's all rubbish - anything that works by helping to bring in business or increase your visibility is hardly rubbish  tongue

Re: Linking to Other sites?

So if I reply to this post once it credits me with one backlink. If i reply again does that count as two backlinks or would google see it still as one link?

How about posting on different threads on this site, does each post count as a different backlink?

Thanks for the info so far

Re: Linking to Other sites?

You can as every page on this site is seen as a separate web page despite the fact each page is generated on demand by PHP (known as a server side language) on the server, a dynamic site.

You might have all these links on forums but google still needs to index them. So even if you have the links out there it doesn't mean google knows about them. On dynamic pages like this it might not get round to indexing them. You can see what links go to your site by typing "links:yoursitedomain" into google.

Re: Linking to Other sites?

You can see what links go to your site by typing "links:yoursitedomain" into google.

Google has a well known and somewhat curious habit of not always listing all valid backlinks indexed by it's search engine.

To get a more accurate picture use a backlink checker such as Backlink Watch - it's free so it's slow...gives pretty reliable results though (eventually!) smile

Backlink Watch is particularly good because it tells you which backlinks you have which are no follow (see my earlier post in this thread which I explain why no follow backlinks aren't helpful for SEO - I'm not saying don't ever get backlinks from no follow sites though - they're still useful as human visitors may click on your link even if search engines won't follow it to see where it leads!)

Re: Linking to Other sites?

Thanks for all those sites Lou, spent a little while listing on them  lol

I noticed we come up page 9 through your site for Sheffield, and about page 999 direct (ok maybe exageration  big_smile)

Not that I spend hours trawling through to see where we are every day of course!

Just another question, does the amount of people that go onto the website help you get up on google pages?

I am just waiting now to see how many backlinks there are on the site you recommended, at the moment it is stuck at 5?!? I am sure I have a few more than that though, it feels like I have submitted to hundreds of sites  yikes

Re: Linking to Other sites?

@ Lele - a couple of things - add any further links gradually. Search engines get suspicious if you suddenly amass vast shedloads of links and might assume you've done something frowned upon like buying them.

The sites you have linked to may not yet be showing up on a backlinker checker as the search engines may not have indexed them yet, so check back in a few weeks if they don't show up.

The simple answer to your question about whether the number of visitors to your pages influences your ranking is yes. Talking specifically about Google as it's still the most dominant search engine, it's complicated as no-one really knows for sure exactly what algorithmn Google uses to rank sites and the fact that it moves the goalposts on a regular basis, but user behaviour does seem to matter in terms not only of how many visitors you get to your site but how they came to be there, how long they spend there, what they do while they're there and where they go afterwards. In a nutshell the longer they stay and the more pages of your site they visit, the more impressed Google is.

Don't get too bogged down in worrying about SEO though...as I told you, the links you're building and the way your site has been built will deliver the goods - but you need to give it a bit of time for your hard work to pay off. As driving instructors in the main are optimising for a limited geographic area and thus have limited competition in comparison to a website for a business or product designed to appeal to a nationwide customer market, a well written and competently optimised website should rank OK eventually - provided of course that your competitors haven't done a more effective job than you!

I have to agree with this a lot. You can have a big bundle of links but if your site isn't well written with optimisation in mind it will be beaten by the better optimised sites. Writing a well optimised site is a massive subject and should be the first concern before appearance and functionality.

At least I will get a break from adding to sites now then lol  smile

Just off topic and regarding the google tracker code, I have got one from google, but everytime i put it where google say to put it, it always comes up on the page, is there an easy way of hiding it?

Re: Linking to Other sites?

I had a look at your site Lela. I guess the Google code isn't there at the moment. Looking at the code, was it created with frontpage? If it's the Google code I am thinking of it needs to be a meta tag in the header.  Does this make sense, or have you not encountered the raw code in the web tools you used? If you can see the text it is appearing in the body.

The other interesting thing using authoring tools like frontpage is making a website that complies to the W3C standards (see the buttons at the bottom of this page). These are the standards set down that web browsers use to make the page. Yours shows up 69 errors so could cause problems for a lot of browsers, especially the troublesome Explorer 6. Google also prefers standard compliant sites. If anything else it doesn't confuse the robots. I would suggest you look at getting your site optimised and standards compliant before putting a lot of effort into linking to get a high ranking.

Re: Linking to Other sites?

Thanks Colin,

Yes it is done in front page, I had never done a website before a couple of months ago, so it has all been a massive learning curve.

We bought a cheap very basic website to start with, but it had allsorts of problems, so i thought i would have a play and start again, except I didn't know there were 69 errors! whoops.

Which package would you reccommend using instead of front page?

Thanks again

Lele

Re: Linking to Other sites?

My opinion now, Lela, is that it has to be written in pure XHTML code. Our web designers use Dreamweaver and although we have managed a page 1 on Google in Portsmouth for 4 years we can't get there in other cities and towns. I have done a lot of work now to teach myself about websites and optimisation as we went to an on line booking database system. During this it became apparent that our front end website whist excellent and better than most others is still not very well optimised.

As I posted earlier optimisation is a massive subject and you have to understand it and plan your site around it before you start any building. Suffice to say we now have 2 web sites running and are starting on getting the new one noticed, we expect it to take up to a year. The new one was written in XHTML after a plan was put together. We then reprogrammed it up in PHP, a language that runs at the server so it can make a site which will be over 1200 pages eventually but there is really only the equivalent of 3 pages on the server. It works out what to display from the domain name so http://driving-lessons.brightredl.co.uk will bring up a different page to http://driving-lessons-town-portsmouth.brightredl.co.uk the same page it just knows about the town from the second one and adjusts the text.

I would suggest run with your site get some links in but learn about XHTML and optimisation for your next version. If you understand XHTML the programming tools are free, you use basic text editors like the notepad in windows or one of the many open source ones available to download free. I favour Text Wrangler on my Mac. Firefox has lots of free add ons to to help page building. Do a 'view source' in your browser of various sites, look at yours generated by frontpage (you have a lot of white space so you have to go down the page) and ours hand coded. There is a visible difference and you could probably even understand ours a bit with no knowledge.  If you find this too much then you will have to pay people to do your site for you as your competition probably  will eventually.

As soon as you use a  high level editor you end up with a compromise in the code as the software has to make it's best efforts to generate it based on what you have drawn. If you look at the link to our new site below you will see the links bar at the top of the site is blue text on red that looks bad. I am trying to get over this (no ideas yet) but it is purely for optimisation. If there were pretty buttons here with loads of javascript, or even images, googlebots would be put off as this is one of the first things they see in the code. So for the sake of the bots the links are normal text links the colour of which is dictated by the users browser. This is not the sort of thing you are generally aware of using a high level editor so end up with pretty site and bad code.

I have rambled on again, I hope this is useful.
