Any Tips on How to Stopping Smoothly?

Hi.  I just had my 6th driving lesson today.  I still have difficulty stopping in junctions to turn right.
What I do is break slowly then press break firmly and clutch down.  The problem is it makes me
and my instuctor to jerk forward.  Is it alright to break slowly then clutch down and press brake firmly
to stop the car?

Your answrs in your statement, as you're coming to a stop just release the brake pedal pressure slightly, but not enough to let the vehicle roll forward. Try this pulling up to the curb a few times before doin junctions.

neutral Think about the weight of the car and allowing the weight of the car to stop it.

3 stages of braking

Cover the brake pedal ready to brake

Brake gently encouraging the car to slow down, increase pressure accordingly.

As the car comes to a stop, nice and gently off the brake and allow the weight of the car to bring it to a complete stop.

The place to practice this is on a nice quiet road away from general hubub.

I think that you are squeezing the brake pedal just as it is coming to a stop, instead of just allowing it to stop. big_smile

To FRANKS and Ttomttom:
Thanks very much for the replies.  You are both very helpful.
I realized now what is wrong with my braking to a full stop.

With respect should your Instructor not be telling you how to stop smoothly instead of jerking with you lol

Going to get a bit crude here.

Smooth braking should be like using the loo.

A gentle squeeze, turning into a firm push, tapering off at the end!

Nice one jack!! lol

Seems like you've solved the problem anyway raquel. The key to the smooth stop is just realising some pressure off the brake just before you're about to jerk forward..... but don't take your foot all the way off the pedal!
