LEFT REVERSE

HI ALL,need help on left reverse on to the minor road,is there any ref points ,i am on pink and the way i was told was when the kerb is on the corner of back nearside window, you do 1/2 turn left on a gradual corner,if the kerb moves toward the passenger door add another 1/4.got a pupil but spent 1 hour and this didnt seem to work, also tried full lock when the kerb in middle of nearside window, still didnt work.i didnt allow the pupil to look in the mirrors,is that where my fault is?any help pliz, faz
also bay parking pupil had trouble, parked 1m away from the 3rd line from the bay wth mirror ref point in line.told im to do full lock, and slow moving, pupil was just touching the lines, question here is when do they know that the car is in bay and when do they take the lock off, also are they allowed to go forward and straigthen the car?any help will be much appreciated, faz :?

Re: LEFT REVERSE

Reference points depend on the car and the person.. Evryone sits in a diff position so sees ref points differently so they need to establish their own.

All theyre doing is steering round a corner albeit backwards.. I tend to use the mirror with most of my pupils.. Just keep the kerb in the same place as they go round.. So long as observations are OK this is not a problem.

Bay park can be done different ways.. Basically using your method if you start in the same position each time, steer quickly and drive slowly, you end up in the same finish position each time.. so the important thing is where to start from?? With mine using this method it is look down the third line and line it up with the middle of the door.. Just need to make sure they have a consistent method so the only variable is the start position.. You can do it backwards to find out where to be - start in the bay... drive forward slow... get full lock on... when parallel with the back of the bay move forward about a foot look where the line is.

Yes they can adjust it.. Like most things its best to get it right first time.. Adjustment could be marked as a driver fault for control (and it adds need for more obs, which could also be faulted).. Also could end up taking too long and that could be a fail if not careful.. Even touching the lines is not automatic fail.

Re: LEFT REVERSE

Hi Faz, Aspyre has given you a good explanation above. However you are highlighting one of the fundamental problems in the link between part 2 and 3 training. You mention ''I was told''. Unfortunately being told is not good enough. When you are going through your part 2 training it should be with a view to teaching your pupils what you are doing and how you are doing it, NOT just passing a driving test.

If I were you I would take a day off and go back through all the manoeuvres yourself, if necessary stop the car and move across to the instructors seat and build your instructional reference points up from there, as they will never change.

This may seem like going back on what you have done, but your post suggests thats exactly what you need to do. You must have good solid reference points for yourself from the instructors side of the car, these will not change. When you get to each point you can then ask your pupil (SE) what they can see and get them to build their own points. Make sure when you are teaching a pupil that you teach them how to build these points, as when they pass their test they won't necessarily be driving the same car, and this information is vital for them to park, reverse etc.

Hope you see the sense in what I am saying, good luck on the pink. Ev

Re: LEFT REVERSE

also bay parking ..... when do they take the lock off

Straighten the wheels just a second before the car is straight in the bay, by the time the steering is straight the car will be straight.

Re: LEFT REVERSE

Manouvering problems are invariably due to poor all round obs (including not using mirrors correctly). Too much emphasis on reference points leads to pupil not being aware of relative position of vehicle (don't know when it's straight because they're not looking properly).

Improve the all round obs and you'll improve the manouvering ability.

Re: LEFT REVERSE

Your point of turn for the left reverse can be found easily by using quick glances to the passenger door mirror - you will find that as the corner curves around the gap between the rear near side wheel begins to widen.

Re: LEFT REVERSE

I just tell mine to start steering when the rear wheels are in line with the start of the corner then follow the corner through the rear window and the door mirror.

Incredibly simple, easy to understand and works in any car with any person.

Re: LEFT REVERSE

faz what way do you do? rather than try and teach ref points drive it the way you did it for part 2 and teach it that way if you understand it you will find it much easier to teach. After all teaching to drive is only a transfer of your knowledge
