Check test

Hi everyone

Sorry to sound stupid, but reading a previous thread it was suggested that a check test in the first year is an educational test, graded 4+ if to a good standard.  My understanding is that even in the first year if you get an 'E', you only have one more shot before senior seadi comes in, but upon reading another thread, it appears this only happens after a year in the job...I am confused....is it 3 strikes and you're out regardless of when you get your test, or does the 3 strikes and you're out apply after a year in the job and after your first test?...Hope this makes sense and someone can clarify this for me.

Re: Check test

Hi Bouncer,

Many ADIs believe that if they receive a check test within 12 months of passing their Part 3, it will be an "Educational" check test. This is NOT the case. "Educational" is a grade given at the the discretion of the Examiner (ADI) if he/she regards your poor performance is due to lack of practical experience.

This is what it says in the ADI-1 (my bold highlight):

The grade will be that of the lowest mark within the core competencies. The grading should not be entered until after the debrief.

Regarding your specific question subsequent check tests. The following quotes are also taken directly from the ADI-1 on the DSA website:

All ADI’s will be advised at the conclusion of their check test of your assessment e.g. Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or E.
An ADI who is assessed as sub-standard, that is grade 1, 2, 3, or E, should be clearly told at some stage during the debrief that their instruction is not at an acceptable level. They should also be told that a letter explaining the weakness will follow and that they will be seen again in approximately two months (grade 2) or three months (grade 3). Grade E should be seen before first 12month period is up.

In the case of sub-standard ADI’s the Examiner (ADI) should make a note on form ADI 26 (C/T) to the effect that the ADI was told that his instruction was below the required standard, that they will be written to and will be seen again at the appropriate interval. This should be entered in the report section on the back page of the form together with any further information relevant to the check test.

Grade `E' Educational Check Test - On the first check test after entering the Register the ADI should be tested in the normal way. It may be that a satisfactory grading cannot be given because the lesson was not up to the standard required, in this case the check test should be regarded as purely educational and the letter `E' should be entered in place of the normal assessment figure. The ADI must have their faults clearly explained to them and they must be confirmed in writing (with a copy to the ADI Branch) Subsequent check tests should be assessed in the normal way. The first check test should be about 2 to 3 months after entering the Register, and the second check test about 6 months later.

"The three strikes and you're out" applies to ALL sub-standard grades. Hope this clarifies the situation.

Re: Check test

Hi whodareswins

Thanks for your post.  It does clear up my mis-understanding...thank you.  It does make me wonder, though, why a marking is 'E' and not just graded 1,2, or 3.  Presumably the logic behind an E is to make a first check test fail a little more palletable?  Hope I am not being cynical, but this is how it appears.
