STANDARD ADVANCED DRIVING TEST

Hello

I just thought that you may be interested in seeing what the Advanced driving test involves,so here goes.

How hard is the IAM test? Well again just as with the ordinary driving test,it depends on each persons ability.some find the test hard others don't.some sail through the training and the actual test, with others it takes a little longer.

How long is the Driving test itself? The test last for approximately 1 and a half hrs.

The maneuvers I had to do were Left hand reverse,Turn in the road (3 point as I call it). you could be expected to do Parallel Park as well.

Driving errors allowed none as such it is NOT an ordinary driving test,as long as you DO NOT do a Moving traffic offence and give a safe smooth progressive drive you would be ok.again it depends on which area you are in as we all work slightly different.

To go about obtaining training you can find out where your nearest branch is by contacting the Institute of Advanced Motorists the web page is.
www.IAM.org.uk

You will find all the information you require on there,it will give you your nearest one.
I cannot comment on how any other IAM group works,as each one works slightly different.

We operate on 8weeks training then an assessment,if you pass the assessment you will be put in for test,if further training is needed then you will be given it.
As I said each group works differently.
All Training is included in the cost you pay to IAM.

As long as you have been a FULL LICENCE HOLDER for 3 months you are able to do this course.

I would recommend it to both Young and Older Drivers alike.

I hope this helps you understand a little more about it.

Any questions please feel free to ask.

Re: STANDARD ADVANCED DRIVING TEST

Hello
Sorry I have just got this from the IAM website it goes into more detail than what I have done above.

The Advanced Test

The Advanced Driving Test lasts for about 90 minutes and will usually cover between 30 and 40 miles along all types of road (town driving, motorways (if available) or dual carriageways, and even country lanes).

Your Examiner will hold a Police Advanced Driving certificate (either serving or ex Police Class 1) and will have extensive experience from working within the Traffic sections of the Police Force.

The Test gives a thorough workout of driving ability, allowing the candidate to alter their drive according to the conditions and environment of the road. The types of road vary from quiet country roads, motorways to busy town centres. In each case there are hazards and situations that need to be avoided and taken care of using the methods and techniques that advanced driving gives. There may be situations where the candidate can show flair and panache (or what we term as Sparkle) on an open country road where optimum progress can be gained at maximum safety, using optimum road positioning and excellent observation. All this combines to give a brisk smooth drive, at the legal limit on the open road. In other situations, the candidate will need to show restraint and composure to deal with tricky hazards that may become apparent throughout the drive. Such as in a town centre situation, where observation is used to pick out hazards in situations that are constantly changing. The main objective is that the candidate has to perform well in all situations rather than excel in one.

Many people often comment on the Test after taking it and more often than not, the comments revolve around how much they enjoyed the drive. On Test the candidate gets to "show off" the new skills that they have been tuning for the weeks during their course. The Advanced Driving Test IS NOT EASY but is within the reach of most motorists with the right guidance.

Re: STANDARD ADVANCED DRIVING TEST

Just found these figures out thought you may be interested, this is since the IAM was established in 1956.

The IAM has a total
of more than 200 groups across the UK, and more than 100,000
members - all of whom have taken and passed the advanced
driving or riding test. More than 300,000 drivers and riders
have taken the advanced driving test since the IAM was
established in 1956.
