60 on a 70 road, is it illegal/dangerous?

I found this article on another forum.

It basically says that driving at 60 on 70 roads can save you up to 20% of your fuel, depending on the car.

I'm going on a trip up to Exeter at the weekend with a full car, and with the rising costs of fuel and the strikes planned for the same time, I am seriously considering doing this.

Edit: I don't have a speed limiter like the 308 so I will be relying on GPS speed wink

Most economic speed is around 57 mph.  Try it.  Not illegal, on a national speed limit road, but could be a nuisance if holding up other traffic!

Isn't that what the lorries do anyways? motorway situation 60 with the lorries is alright aint it?

Having said that, how many people stick to 70? I do, and get 58ish on long journeys from a 1.9TDI 100 bhp skoda fabia.

I don't think thats too bad!  at 60, might get a little more. Fair enough!

doing 60 on the motorway is absolutely fine as well is being more economical it is considered as eco-driving reducing carbon footprint, like the previous adi as long as your not causing a habit shouldnt be a problem at all certainly not illegal but certainly will save you fuel and wear and tear on your engine

Hi Dog

Match your speed to traffic in left lane on DC or motorway. Bear in mind most LGV's are restricted to 56 mph, but your speedo will probably read 60 when you match them. Fairly obviously you may cause problems if lorries can get past you.

Trouble is , if you were to drive in the left lane at 70 mph- What are the other 2 for? For this reason alone a slower speed in lane 1 is fine.

B loody hell DSA/Rospa/Iams/Diamond there's an idea  yikes yikes yikes  Its not really the end of the world not to do the speed limit is it!

nice one Hector, cos there is a difficulty with speed limits, and economical driving, I tried this a while ago, on a trip from manchester to hinckley, motorways and the A5, various conditions, got 71 mpg, (according to the focus trip computer)  compared with about 48 "batting on" so you are correct, where go you DSA IAM Rospa etc!!!

Being an ecomentalistreehugginghippy I do this all the time.

As has been mentioned, matching speed with the trucks in the left lane is sensible, though for practicality's sake I go around 62 (probably around 60 considering speedos), overtaking the majority of the trucks so that I don't cause them to slow and use more fuel.

It does take a little more forward planning to not get stuck with a tail of traffic when overtaking (which usually makes you feel like you should speed up - negating the effect).

The gain in fuel consumption is quite limited though between 62 and 70 (around 1mph), so the real gains can be made around town and at each end of the journey - keep bigger gaps and come off the gas as soon as you see something ahead which could slow you down. You probably know all the usual stuff about revs, but in a petrol try to change up (on the flat) at 2200rpm and in a diesel at around 1800. On hills you could adjust this accordingly.

Apologies if any of that was an egg sucking lecture.

Having read and teach the principles of Roadcraft nowhere do I see in the book that you must drive to the speed limit at all times.
I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding over "advanced driving". We are not for "must do the speed limit at all times". We are in my humble opinion here to teach/advise other road users of a more economical use of the car by increasing our powers of observation hence giving us more time to react to any hazard earlierand safer.
By reacting earlier to what we see we therefore do not brake harder, saving a few pence on replacing brake pads, saving a few pence on fuel and more importantly remain in a calm state of mind throughout our drive making a few pence saving on the way we generally drive.
The savings are also cutting down the costs of collisions between motorised transport/pedestrians.
The average cost of a KSI runs at around 2 million pounds, a great saving to the NHS if we can cut these costs.So we should not only be ranting about saving money on fuel but also looking at the bigger picture and saving possibly the most important thing HUMAN LIFE.

We need to seperate what the various testing organisations require during test conditions and what they recommend for normal driving.

On tests (Lets take the Basic "L" Test as the example), the examiner is wanting to know if you can respond to signs appropriately, and that you can make good progress up to and including the prevailing speed limits if safe to do so.
Outside of the test environment, the same examiner would probably encourage you to drive in such a way that was economical for your vehicle and taking into account eco-friendly principles, not just for yourself but how you can help other road users to maintain steady speeds too, which is most likely to include NOT travelling at a speed that hinders other road users uneccassarily.

Yes, but the majority of 70 roads are multi-lane, so this should not cause a problem as long as it is well planned as you say and the driver fits well with the traffic which is restricted to the lower speed limits on these roads.

Again, completely agree, however when working with people who train for the organisations mentioned they will often recommend "making progress" above economy. I have been in fleet sessions with drivers who have been told that they must "drive to the limit" on motorways, when they feel more comfortable driving at 60-65. I see no point in changing someone's driving style for the sake of progress when they drive safely at a slightly lower speed.

I'm not a great believer in the sanctity of human life, but the mistakes made by some humans can cause real distress financially, physically and emotionally to other humans.

Personally - I'll carry on ranting Bill if you don't mind. I'm not so worried about saving MONEY on fuel as saving FUEL itself. The sooner we start to understand the implications of our consumption the sooner we will be able to move towards a more stable economy and environment.

And this is the balance that we need to strike, something I have already noticed the more experienced examiners are taking into consideration even on L-tests. Maybe someone from one of the "advanced driving" organisations could let us know whether this kind of balance is looked for on one of their exams.

"Making progress" was my main concern. I was always under the impression that if it was safe to drive at the speed limit, you should do.

However if it can save me a fair bit of money, especially now that petrol is 116.9p a litre, I'd happily stick 10mph under the limit on a 70 road. I know lorries and stuff are electronically limited to 57mph. Which is why I will be using GPS speed to monitor how fast I'm going rather than the car speedo (which I know is inaccurate by about 3mph at 40mph).

I know of quite a few stretches of DC with only one lane each side, and also know of at least 2 stretches of single carriageway 70mph limit roads, one has 2 lanes in one direction and 1 lane the other way; the other one has 1 lane each way.

My understanding has always been that to be a dual carriageway, the road must have two lanes or more in direction of travel and a barrier dividing the oposing carriageway, that barrier being a rail/hedge/grass verge or similar.

Hi

The A6144 'Carrington Spur' in Trafford Borough, single carriegway 70 mph.

That used to be another, but it was A6144(M) then. it has now been downgraded from motorway status and has a posted limit, I think it is 50 but it is a while since I went down it.
The others, which I mentioned, are both motorway status but are single carriageways.

Single carriageway with 70mph limit, I would like to know exectly where. There is no requirement on number of lanes for a road to be classified as dual carriageway, purely the barrier of some sort between the two traffic flows.

Tried the 60mph motorway run recently a few times, much more relaxed drive (generally with the exeption of lorry drivers charging up at high speed from behind!) usually finding a wagon whos doing 55-60 (in front or behind) is good, but managed 72mpg from a 1.9TDI Skoda Fabia, with the air con on!  aint bad!

I personally think it depends on the prevailing road and traffic conditions.

My preference would be gentle and smooth acceleration, although I would consider using brisk acceleration depending on the prevailing conditions.

Depends on whether you want to implement eco-driving.  the slower acceleration with early gear changes will save more fuel with no loss of safety.

Recently managed just under 50mpg driving from Swindon to Oxford in a 1.6 petrol Focus.

Which is why I will be using GPS speed to monitor how fast I'm going rather than the car speedo (which I know is inaccurate by about 3mph at 40mph).

Hi dog, how old is your car?

The reason I ask is that my 05 plated Fiesta TDCI had a speedo that was approx 2.5 mph out at 70mph in relation to the sat nav on a level road.

However my 08 plated Fiesta TDCI has a speedo that is within 1.5mph of the sat nav at 70mph on a level road.

3mph drift at 40mph is getting close to the limits of what is legally acceptable.
