STOP Junctions

Can it be confirmed please for an ADI part 2 test.
At a solid white line STOP junction, does the parking brake need to be applied to re-inforce the vehicle has stopped?
Or can you stop, select 1st gear whilst observing then proceed?
Thanks in advance smile

Re: STOP Junctions

I would apply the rule "when a pause becomes a wait" and use the handbrake accordingly.  Alternatively as you have said, stop, select 1st gear whilst observing, then proceed if safe to do so.

Re: STOP Junctions

By applying the handbrake, the risk of being shunted forwards into passing traffic, from a rear end collision, is reduced. You could also say that by keeping your foot on the brake you are alerting following traffic to the fact that you have stopped! Depends on the visability ie can see ok but need to wait, use handbrake. If need to peep and creep you must stop first to comply with the law so handbrake saves any arguments. If you don't want to apply the handbrake, commentary to the examiner would ensure he knows you have stopped first.
Hope this helps you decide but I would usually apply the handbrake.

Re: STOP Junctions

There is no need to apply the handbrake at a stop sign if you are not waiting. A mandatory stop means that the car must come to a halt before proceeding. Now whether that halt is one second or one minute would determine whether the handbrake should be applied or not.
In fact I would mark undue heitancy if the handbrake were applied when the driver should have been on their way after effective observations.
Ask the SEADI (or whatever they are called now) next time you are at the TC. He/She will confirm that there is no need to apply the handbrake at a stop junction.

Re: STOP Junctions

Or in other words, it isn't a legal requirement to put the handbrake on, but it IS a legal requirement to stop.

On Part 2, if you applied it unnecessarily and it caused a delay you could get faulted for it if you weren't careful. On the other hand, if you didn't apply it on a slight slope then rolled a little then you could get faulted for that (possibly a serious). With pupils there's also the risk of them doing it too soon and actually stopping the car with the handbrake.

Re: STOP Junctions

Is it reasonable to expect a Part 2 candidate to be above "Rolling Back" slightly? after all we ain't discussing the L Test are we?

Re: STOP Junctions

I'm aware of that, but then not everyone passes Part 2, do they? wink

You'd also expect a Part 2 candidate to drive perfectly and not get any faults at all, but it doesn't happen like that much. Rolling (forwards or backwards) is as much a potential fault as not looking properly, not being accurate in a manoeuvre, not changing gears smoothly or at the right time... in fact any of the possible reasons for getting a fault.

I mentioned it for information and as advice wink

Re: STOP Junctions

If you are approaching a stop line on the flat or a downhill then it is easy to stop. select gear, look, assess, decide to go or apply handbrake. If you are approaching it on an uphill then stop, apply handbrake, select gear, look, assess, decide when to apply gas and find bite. This way there is no hesitation in the 1st scenario and less likely of rollback in the 2nd

Pretty much what Vanda is saying.
