Re: Driving in the dark

Hi Tracy
I presume you know where your lights are & how to put them on & where your other auxiliary controls are.

When driving in the dark you should drive at a speed so you can stop within the distance. If in town take extra care because pedestrians & cycles are so much harder to see. If in the country only use your full beams when it is safe.

Take care driving in the dark has many hidden dangers have a word with your instructor.

Re: Driving in the dark

Hi Tracey,

You lose a lot of colour vision at night, and your peripheral vision (ability to see things alongside without averting towards your eyes) is reduced as well. Scan constantly.
Objects tend to merge into shadows, even pedestrians & cyclists as Pilgrim says, are very hard to see - especially when caught in the glare of oncoming headlights.
Be alert and SCAN constantly.
The pedestrian problem is made worse by the fact that most pedestrians, even if they themselves are drivers, don't seem to know just how hard they are to see. (Unless they have bright teeth and are very happy. And facing you, of course).

You miss out on a lot of visual clues at night, making it harder to judge the distance and speed of other road users - be careful when emerging. Also don't rely on other cars having their lights on to make them easy to see - you can get the occasional tired or inebriated driver driving by the light of streetlights without their own lights on. (You do down here anyway).
This is a reminder that when driving late at night you will be sharing the road with tired & inebriated drivers.

Preserve your night vision - avoid looking directly at any light source, ESPECIALLY car headlights. When out in the country have the instrument panel lights turned down to a soft glow, as long as they are still readable.

Drive within the limits of your lights!!! A common mistake made by very experienced drivers, especially out in the country, is that they insist on maintaining "daytime speeds" because "they know every inch of the this road". It doesn't matter how well you know the road, on low beam at high speed you have very little if any chance of seeing an unexpected object on the road (e.g. dead buffalo) let alone avoiding it. Oops wrong country. Er, dead cow?

Preparing to drive:

(1) The driver - not tired, mentally alert. For example, avoid driving long distances straight after work. Familiarise yourself with night-driving controls including the dip switch, dipping mirror, fog lights and dashboard brightness control BEFORE driving off.

(2) The vehicle. Check that the lighting system is working and legal. Clean windows, clean mirrors, clean headlight lenses, clean mind. Well 3 out of 4 isn't bad I suppose.
Don't carry a heavy load in the rear, it can upset the aim of your lights and you could dazzle oncoming drivers even on low beam.

Quick quiz on night driving (this one is for the Northern Territory, I don't know whether the questions are applicable to the UK):

a. When are you required to drive with the lights on?

b. How do you adjust your mirrors at night before driving off, when it's hard to see?

c. What do you do if the lights of an oncoming car dazzle you, and the driver doesn't dip?

d. What do the colours of cats-eye reflectors on the road mean?

e. What extra precautions do you take if broken down at night (e.g. flat tyre)? What safety equipment does your car carry for night-time breakdowns?

f. Do have spare lamps for tail lights, brake lights etc in your car? Do you know how to change them?

g. What's the last thing that goes through a bug's mind when it hits the windscreen?
