Range Change Gear Boxes

Hey there,

I passed my LGV nearly 10 years ago whilst in the forces, and have never had to use a range change gearbox. I was wondering if anyone would be able to briefly explain how to use one, many thanks.

Seeing as none of the big rig boys have answered i'll have a stab at explaining what little I know about truck boxes. I'm neither licenced to drive them nor instructor for them, although i have driven a few when i was 16+17yr old trainee diesel fitter back in early '80's.

Basically consider a standard gearbox with lets say 3 gears that are quite wide ratio apart.

This gearbox would require very high RPM before changing gears and then have very low rpm for the new gear.
So to aide smoother ride and lower rpm differnces between gears an additional drive shaft is added and the with 2 sizes of gears. operated by a seperate lever/switch by the driver a solenoid pushes the shaft so 1 or the other cog engages to the drive output from the gear box. You have effectively doubled the number of gears available but more than this you have halved the differences between gears.

example.
gear 1 is selected with splitter lever set to low range. to change up you can use the splitter switch to effectively give you gear 1 + 1/2 ratio. (1 + over drive). To change to gear two you would select gear 2 and move the splitter lever back to low range.

Many trucks also have a second gearbox arrangement (either bolted to the output of the gearbox or to the final drive assembly). Again a lever or switch will change gears within this second gearbox unit. in the simplest form it will be another high/low range. Effectively doubling your available gear ratios again so now you have a 12 speed availabilty. these secondary gearboxes are typically for low gearing and used for heavy loads and at low speeds.

splitters and range changers I have seen have been a slide switch on the top of the gearstick knob and a finger lever just under the gear stick knob.
If memory serves me right the finger lever was for the gearbox high/low splitter and the slide switch was for the auxilary gearbox/final transmission gear selection.

There are many different types, its best to ask for training in the specific vehicles you are using.

Hi phil2136..

Okay.. an introduction to the "Range Change Gearbox".

There's nothing special about it. Most Rigid Lorries (LGV C) will have either a six speed box or an eight speed box. The six speed will be the same as you would find in a car or van.

The Eight speed box will usually be a "range change" and will normally have four stick positions with a switch on the front of the stick.

Gears one to four are selected by ensuring the range switch is in the down position. Operate the gears as required (one to four). When you are in forth and require fifth, Flick the range switch up, and move the stick back to the first position (first gear) and go through the gear box again.

Some eight speed range change boxes will also have a "splitter gear". This is an extra switch on the stick that will halve the gear you're in.. which is where you end up getting 18 forward gears (including the crawler) and two reverse gears..

Some gear sticks however don't have a switch to change range. They have two sides to the stick postion. Low range is found by pushing the stick as far over to the left as you can and then moving through gears one to four. High range is found by pulling the stick towards you (to the right) and moving through gears five to eight. This type is usually found on Iveco's and MAN's

Unless you're fully loaded, block changing is the best way to move through the gears. i.e. Start off in low range and third gear, pull away and when ready, flick the range switch up and move the stick to the 1st/5th gear position and then follow on with sixth, seventh and eighth gears.

nice points and descriptions above, but as Redragonbus says, try to get training on the LGV you are using, after that you will gain experience from other types as and when required.
PS - its deffo NOT rocket science, it only takes a short time to pick them up

After passing your test.. try and get some work with a good driving agency. This will give you the chance to try out as many types of box as possible.

Never be worried about asking someone to show you around a gearbox if you're not sure.. It's better than trying to grind your way around it in the yard with all the boys watching!!
