Why Should the SE decide on the route if your the instructor

 A thought has just crossed my head ,that is if your teaching a pupil 'T' junctions emerge you would have aroute in mind and would then assess there driving and then rectify the faults  by talk through around the junctions they have just emerged from and for that thhey would realise easier where they had gone wrong.Once they have got that right you would then move on to other junctions and Q/A to ensure learning has taken place.
But on part 3 test the SE tells you where to go and so in a way has control therefore giving them the oppitunity to get away from the trouble junction and expect you to put it right on the next one making the test unrealistic as you are listening to there directions then converting into your instructions which leads to BRAIN FRAZZLE. :?  :?:

Anyone got a view on this .

Re: Why Should the SE decide on the route if your the instructor

When you pick up a pupil from are area you are not used to, you must be able to adapt.

IE; If you select your own area, you may have planned it (I'm sure i would) maybe you examiner wants to see how you cope with what he/she gives you, and if there is some thing he/she wants to test you on, like a weak area of you training, he/she can direct you to a area that this can be done.

It all part of the test  smile

Re: Why Should the SE decide on the route if your the instructor

PDI's on part 3 may not know the area, the SE does. He realises this therefore gives you instruction on which way to go. I live in Nottingham and took my test in Leicester. I didn't have a clue were I was. If he's not happy with what you've just done, at a L. emerge say, he will direct you to another similar junction to try again. They will give you instructions in plenty of time.

You've enough to think about without worrying about where you're going to go!

Re: Why Should the SE decide on the route if your the instructor

Yes but all good instructors would assess the area and thhen work therelessson plan around it but SE do as they feel on the day.Dont want to argue about it but would like everyone to think back and look .
If you were going out with a pupil that got to a junction then cocked it up would you take them round that same junction till they got t 90percent right then move on to a similar one to see if they had tok positive learning from it or Am i going the wrong way

Re: Why Should the SE decide on the route if your the instructor

I think what we really need to remember here is that Part 3 is not how it happens in the real world!

Of course you would know the area and select appropriate junctions if you were training a real pupil. But on Part 3, you may not even live in the area, so have to rely on the SE's knowledge of suitable locations.

Personally, if I was training a pupil on emerging, then I'd try and pick a location which would allow me to go round the block,  allowing them to perform an emerge at either end. Keeps the overall location compact and gives a little variation at each emerge.

Re: Why Should the SE decide on the route if your the instructor

Hi,

You should approach part 3 EXACTLY like you would approach a real lesson with a real learner. All your skills of lesson delivery, communication, control, fault analysis etc should be exactly the same as in the real world. Never EVER forget this, or you run the risk of not treating the SE like a learner and disaster could follow . . .

Remember, part 3 is role play. You absolutely must treat the lesson like a real one. YOU are in control of the lesson, NOT the SE. There are some restrictions which make part 3 different to the real world, but these difficulties are placed on the SE, NOT on you.

These restrictions dictate how the 'lesson' should go . . . for instance, the SE only has about 25 mins per phase to test you, so he or she will learn fast IF you teach them well. The SE will not have time to go round the block and back to the same junction. He or she will drive through the first junction, with or without your assistance (phase 1 or 2?) and will then drive towards the next. The SE will give you directions with loads of time for you to repeat them. You will deal with any faults you detect and sort these at the next junction.

I completely understand your concerns about this aspect of part 3, but you must accept it and simply go the way the SE tells you to. Once you are qualified and you are teaching real pupils YOU will decide the route. The SE decides the route on test simply because of the restrictions placed on them.

By the way, never forget what the pre set tests are . . . do you really think that on a junction lesson the SE is assessing your knowledge of junctions and your ability to get them to negotiate junctions perfectly? Because that is absolutely not the main purpose of the pre set tests. The SE is looking for the core competencies and instructor characteristics that make up the personal skills of a good instructor. These skills are far, far more important than dealing with a junction. The SE will assess these skills by simply using 2 or 3 junctions to judge your performance, and any junction will do. The pre set tests are absolutely nothing but a 'test route' for an ADI part 3 test.

Re: Why Should the SE decide on the route if your the instructor

Hi,

Please don't ever worry about asking questions, it's the only way you learn! It's the only way we all learn! I bet there are loads of people who've been thinking of the same things but daren't ask . . . you've probably done a great big favour for loads of PDI's!

Totally agree.
What you must remember Hamilton is the same thing might be going through the mind of a learner. If there's some doubt in their mind then they must ask the question, it needs to be cleared up. It's not trivial it's vital.
