i've read that if the SE doesn't call at least a week in advance then call them .

Re: check test choice

Hi,

On my 1st check test I went for role play. Never heard a thing from SE.

Any way I found a pupil that was willing to have a lesson.

Informed DSA two days before. When I arrived he was expecting role play. He seemed disappointed.

Got an Educational. and did not learn much from him either.

If you choose role play can they choose a topic from Pass Plus?

Got my next Check test in June!

Re: check test choice

I've prefere to use a pupil because you have the choice of the lesson, the type of pupil, know in advance what you are going to do and the SE has less control

Even when things go wrong you can learn from them

Re: check test choice

After my experiences in Part 3, I decided to take my own pupil to my first check test 'thank you very much'! I've not heard anything adverse about doing the 'role play' check test, but I'll DEFINATELY not do one this way - ever!

Can't think of anything worse than trying to second guess somebody pretending to make mistakes.

I teach learner drivers.  I need to be assessed in a realistic situation with those drivers not some charade set up by what might possibly be an inexperienced SEADI.

Re: check test choice

Hi Tuftyclub

The se must let you know, they normally do this approx 2-3 days in advance with the lesson content. If they do not PHONE THEM.Phone them, phone them.
The examiner can role play any pupil they wish, so you really need to know the lesson content.

Bear in mind you will be choosing the route not the examiner, so this differs from the part 3. Another reason to know the lesson content so you can plan a suitable route.Better still take a pupil! Se with years of experience and you first check test, recipe for disaster! The examiner can tie you in gnots!

Take proffesional advice before the check test not after it! You have little chance of anything other than a 4 unless you do this.

Remember an educational is actually better than a 4, cause if you get a 4, your stuck with that for the next 2-3 years.
If you havnt been contacted within the first 12 months phone the DSA!
Once past 12 months your first check test is real and if you stuff it up, you only have 1 more before a visit fron the assistant chief examiner and possibly removal from the register.

2 years down the line from a part 3 pass without any further guidance, you may have real problems with a check test.Bad instructional habits are no different to bad driving habits.

Find yourself local ADI who specialises in check test training. Ask for numbers of other ADI s who have trained with them and evidence of improved gradings. They should ideally sit in on one of your lessons initially, and carry out remedial work from there.

This is also the ideal way to pick the correct pupil. If the pupil can handle the pressure with another adi in the back they can handle the se's presence also.
Remember if a pupil is very nervous on check test the whole thing is very likely to go tits up!

Remember the se is going to be extremely picky, even not mentioning about extra weight in the car cause of the examiners presence is enough to downgrade from 6 to 5.
Moving past the glass barrier in the car unless to use a dual will guarantee a 4, as will lack of or poor recap at the start.

hope this helps you sorry to ramble on!

Re: check test choice

thanks hector and everyone for the advice, after talking to other instructors in the test centre today I've decided to go down the route of pupil on lesson rather than role play, time  to get planning  smile

Re: check test choice

Personally i was very happy to gain a 4 on my first checktest within 5 months. I didnt want an educational whatsoever!! Even if it would have meant i could have gone back and scored higher. I am proud i got a four(wanted a five but i would have been destroyed with an E i work so hard at trying to better myself) and i will be going up the grades with my next one. I only just scuffed a 5.

Watch out Se in 18 months lol

Re: check test choice

I think a discussion with some of the SE's would dispel some of the claims above regarding educational and gaining a grade.

Many people don't manage to get a grade, at an educational check test, because the SE is not happy with some parts of their teaching, this enables them to come back and have another look a bit later.

All the SE is required to do at an educational is exactly that, give an educational overview and opinion. However if he deems that the ADI has performed well enough to be left to develop for a couple of years and he/she is happy with the way the lesson has been conducted then they will give a grade.

If anything to gain a grade at your first check test is a good achievement, and certainly regarded so by the SE's. It is also worth remembering that any grade given is based on what is demonstrated in that hour. I personally feel that the real acid test is what you do with your pupils.

Who matters most the SE you see once every couple of years or the pupils that you work hard with.

Most of the SE's I talk to are just ordinary guys, they know if you are doing your job right, after all they talk to all the DE's in the test centre as well. Ev

Re: check test choice

Good time to get hold of SE's by phone is friday afternoons - that's when they're normally in their cubby hole...  Well... that's when ours is normally in his cubby hole!

Would agree that taking a pupil out for me anyway, was more preferable than having SE role play - you are in control of what you do/cover, you know the pupil, and you can plan the route accordingly - of course, being able to be flexible if something goes pear shaped is also necessary.

''If you choose role play can they choose a topic from Pass Plus?''

Yes as long as its not your first CT. If you request a role-play in the DSA letter will be a LIST OF TOPICS you can choose from. Its not very easy to find so read through all the Bumf closely.
