Should the Drink drive limit be reduced?

On the radio this morning there was a interview suggesting that the drink drive limit was being considered for reduction from 80microgrammes to 50 microgrammes.

I think the sooner the better. There was a representative from the drinks industry that was condoning drinking and driving as long as it was "only a glass or so" as that did not have any effect on a drivers skills.

This in spite of the fact that the other person being interviewed had lost someone,  a daughter I think, due in part to a driver just over the limit.

They were discussing a 0 limit but this was seen to have some issues as absorption through the skin of alcohol based products and mouthwashes would present problems.

It wouldn't make any difference at all. Although the legal limit is 80mcg, nobody is ever charged if they are below 100mcg when tested at the police station.

If they made it a legal limit of 50mcg, they still probably would not charge anyone who is below 100mcg when tested at the nick.

Oh and how do i know this? My uncle Dave just retired from the post of Detective chief super Essex police, and he was involved in the drink driving courses given to Essex police. PLUS, they said it on the programme Road wars on telly the other night smile

My bro is a police man he mentioned 90 being his cut off a few weeks ago. Think each force area may have its own guidelines.

How much more likely are people to cause an accident at 80mcg than at 50? I sense another statistics war between the media and the government.

I agree with zero tolerance.  I am sure they would apply a common sense figure to take care of body absortion issues.

It might also boost bus use.

Re: Should the Drink drive limit be reduced?

The problem with any permitted level is that people will try to calculate how much they can drink followed by how long it takes for the alcohol to leave the system, not very scientific.  A zero level is easy to understand, it means nothing to drink, no guess work, no argument.

Re: Should the Drink drive limit be reduced?

i think it should be nil no drink at all.my nephew and his mates have the right idea.they go out in a group of six mates and take turns as to who the driver and sober that night.they all have nights where they stay on orange/fizzy pop that way they all go out and they stay safe.

Re: Should the Drink drive limit be reduced?

I personally feel it should be ZERO drink at all times, everyone knows the devistation it causes to families of anyone who is killed or injured by drink drivers.

I think women should be banned from drinking whilst accompanying their other halves to the pub.    big_smile

No that is for humour value only.........Zero tolerance, then it gets rid of all of the grey areas. Ev
