Pregnant Pupils

Hi all,

I have a pregnant pupil. Am I right in thinking she does not have to do emergency stops ? And what about manouvers etc ... ?

What should we avoid doing (if anything).

Thanks,

Dan

Re: Pregnant Pupils

Hi Dan,

I have a pupil who's driving test is booked for the day her baby's due. Something is gonna have to change!

I teach as normal providing the pupil feels comfortable. Emergency stops are no problem to most ladies, please check with them and start off braking not too harshly to make sure they're ok.

The driving test will include it if the examiner so chooses, though often they don't.

If you have any doubts or concerns then please don't do it. Ask the lady to check with her doctor or midwife.

Finally, always carry plenty of clean towels and keep your mobile charged.

Regards,

Re: Pregnant Pupils

Hi Dan

Treat your pupil the same way, as you would any of your others.

Manouvers towards the end of her pregnacy may, depending on her build get a little uncomfortable, but providing she's happy and has no medical problems, there's no reason why you shouldn't teach the manouvers as you always do. Just use a bit of common sense, she'll tell you if and when it becomes a problem.

The emergency stop is performed approximately on 1 in 3 tests, if a heavily pregnant woman comes forward to take a practicle test, I'm sure that the examiner, would use their discretion on this one.

However I remember when studying for part 1, I read somewhere that  just being pregnant, does not exempt the candidate from performing the emergency stop.

Do you expect her to take her test prior to having the baby?

If not it'd probably be better to leave, teaching the emergency stop untill she's had the baby. If she is to take it before the baby is born, use your discretion i.e. I wouldn't teach it to someone, who's either in the early or late stages of pregnancy.

Re: Pregnant Pupils

Hi

As stated above, being pregnant does not exclude the need to carry out the emergency stop excercise on test. If she is unable to do this then she should not be driving, test or not. Remember there is always the possibility of a 'real' emergency stop situation arising at any time. If she is unable to carry out the simulated excercise just how would she cope with a real emergency?

Finally, one more piece of advice - admit to nothing and insist on a blood test!
