Help.. insurance confusion?

Just started on my pink and although the car that I'm leasing has got insurance on what other insurances if any do you recomend that I get? Are there any companies that have got a good rep?

Seems like there's soooooo much to learn! Any advice from anyone that's got a bit more experience than me because at the moment, there isn't light at the end of my tunnel!  :?

Apart from car insurance and breakdown insurance, it's a good idea to get public liability and professional liability insurance.  These are offered alongside membership of either DIA or MSA: I don't think you'll get better back up and certainily not cheaper: just so as to take no chances, I'm a member of both.

Re: Help.. insurance confusion?

Hi, and sorry to be boring on the subject of "extra" insurance.

1. Fact - Public Liability Insurance and 3rd Party Insurance are one and the same thing. 3rd Party Insurance is the minimum required by law. My ADI insurance includes £20 mill of "public liability" and it is not necessary to purchase it separately from the DIA/MSA.

2. Regarding Professional Indemnity Insurance - There are no insurance providers or brokers that will supply this type of insurance to an individual ADI/PDI. I have been in contact with at least 12 companies specialising in PI insurance and they ALL informed me that they would be delighted to sell it to me but they are prevented from doing so by the Financial Services Authority because there is "no risk". If there was any risk, they would all be falling over themselves to sell us policies. There is no case law involving claims of this nature being made against an ADI. Both the DIA and MSA have specially negotiated group policies which they can offer "free" with membership because of the near-zero risk involved.

Just check your regular ADI insurance to see the amount of 3rd party (public liability) cover that is provided. I (personally) do not see the need to join the DIA/MSA for the sake of something you probably already have.

Re: Help.. insurance confusion?

So what is this ADI insurance then?: the only other insurance I've got is my car, and I'm sure that's not covering me for public liability.

Re: Help.. insurance confusion?

Hi Karen,

If you are an ADI, your "car" insurance covers you to drive, to give instruction, pupils to drive, pupils to take tests, pupils off-road, your checktests etc. This insurance is only available to ADIs/PDIs and dual controls are required to be fitted. "Regular" car insurance would not cover you for these requirements. As mentioned, 3rd party insurance and Public Liability insurance are the same thing called by different names.  My insurance is with Waveney although there are other brokers out there offering similar products.

Oh> My insurance is with Waveney too, so maybe I'm covered as well, although I don't reckon it'll be with them next time, seeing they were sooo slack when I had a bump.  (Well: not me: wasn't even in the car at the time: it was parked), but anyway, it took them a whole week to make any contact with me: and then it was by letter, telling me some company miles away had been sent details and would be contacting me!  By this time, I'd found a new door from tat yard for £20 and a body shop to paint it and fit it for £250: so didn't seem worth the claim seeing I'd have to pay the excess AND have a mark against my insurance into the bargain: but anyway, the point is it took them a whole week to even contact me.

Re: Help.. insurance confusion?

Karen i know EXACTLY how you feel. Are there any adi insurers who DO NOT use Msl or the other people waverney use forget their name they are blooming hopeless. They still havent got back to me. I was told to 'make up' what happened to my car on test  yikes yikes Yes seriously! The man who told me to go get the damage fixed as it was small then denied it until they got him on loud speaker with me asking him he then told the truth. I was penalised for getting the work done but he had told me to  sad TOTALLY fed up with ALL of them. I paid the ammount due in the end. The wouldn't contact the examiner who was in my car, they wouldn't contact the Dsa so i did all that and it took weeks to get an answer from the Dsa.

No point so i will be ringing them to say i am dropping the claim. No doubt that will take a few months to get sorted out as well. Sick of em to be honest   roll

Re: Help.. insurance confusion?

Oh forgot to say the only people to contact me within three weeks was a woman saying she had looked at my case (not well enough obviously since I was NOT in the vehicle) she was trying to persuade me that i must have an injury!! When i blatantly said i WAS NOT THERE!!!!!! she said oh well give me the number of the pupil then she must have whiplash  yikes yikes

Every single letter said they had read my case which they hadnt as they were asking ME questions like i said i wasn't in the bl**dy car.

Great price from waverney CRAP service from the actual people who count. :x

Re: Help.. insurance confusion?

Just had my renewal through, and looked at the 'small print'.  I must be honest, I wouldn't he happy with their public liablity insurance and all that stuff: seems to me it all revolves around a bump, which may not be the issue if a claim arises.  Anyway, Luchell, I've heard so many stories along the lines of the experiences of yourself and mine, that I feel I'd rather pay that little bit more than take my chances with the Waveney guys if the need arises.  I'll definately be looking around in earnest over the next few weeks. Will keep you all posted.

Re: Help.. insurance confusion?

I'm with Waveney and have made two claims in the last year. One was done a little slow, a month but the other was settled within a couple of weeks.
