Re: Renault Modus

Renault Modus 1.5dCi (65)

I have had the Modus for 1.5 years now and have been very pleased with the car in general.

Only got sick once, the power steering went and took 3 days to fix

The lofty seating position is great, the visability for manoeuvres is excellent.

The engine is a little underpowered i would go for the 86bhp version next time.

I am still not convinced about the styling and feel it may put off some of the fashion conscious youngsters, so may opt for a Clio next time.

Cheers ModMik

Re: Renault Modus

I never understand why when we get a car with character and practicality it is regarded as ugly, but when it is boring and bland and impractical it is acceptable.

Was looking at the Series 1 Multipla today and thought what a great stylish car, but then they spoilt it and made it bland and boring. I loved my Verso the first time I saw one, but now they have discontinued one of the geat cars.

In 21C We get bland boring politicians and bland boring cars.
What a boring era-  all PC and silver.

Re: Renault Modus

Not got one myself but know another adi with one.  Had a test booked and was checking lights, found that 1 headlight wasn't working so 'nipped' to dealer for bulb and was told that he would have to book car in as the whole front bumper had to be removed just to change a bulb.  Lost half a day. Not really very practical is it.  If you are thinkin of one of these i suggest you check this.

Re: Renault Modus

Excellent visability. High seating position for the short pupils. Excellent leg room for two in back on driver improvement. Really pleased with Modus since I got it. I know the headlight problem will cost me one day, but all the pupils that have driven it love the car.

Re: Renault Modus

Just started with the Modus - easy to drive, plenty of room front and rear, excellent view for both driver and instructor - pupils seem to enjoy driving it. (1.4 Oasis)

Re: Renault Modus

I also have the Renault Modus 1.5 DCi.

I have already had the problem of headlight going.  I would recommend if one goes get both bulbs changed as when mine went I just changed the one.  Then a few days later the other went.  :x

Lucky my bro works for a Renault specialists so got discount.  Also the chap who changed the bulb managed to do it in 30mins.  big_smile

Re: Renault Modus

As the originator of this topic a couple of years ago I thought an update might be in order!

I am now on my second Modus after trading in the first one at two years old.  My first Modus was the 1.4 Expression petrol and to be honest was getting a little ropey after 70k miles so I changed it before the expensive cambelt service at 72k.  With hindsight I should have gone for the diesel as the petrol consumption over its lifetime was 32mpg but we all make mistakes... The only major fault was a clutch failure at 53k but beware owners - it's an engine out job costing me around £750 ouch!

That said its such a great tuition car that I replaced it with the 1.5dci 86 diesel and I'm even happier.  The diesel is very responsive with much better acceleration, and as for the fuel consumption I returned 60mpg on a run down to Oxford today.  More realistically my tuition mpg is about 47.  I intend to keep this one for 3 years.

The headlamp bulb issue above could be a pain I guess, but I've yet to have one blow.  If it does I'll just have to take it on the chin.

I find the drawbacks are well eclipsed by the positives:  perky engine, good fuel consumption, great visibility, loads of room (had 6'5" pupil size 15 feet, completely comfortable as was a 25 stone lad!), quiet, air con, etc. etc.

If anyone has specific questions feel free to email via my website.

All the best

Re: Renault Modus

Further update 3 years on.....!

Still using the car mentioned above, hit 86000 miles yesterday and with no major mechanical issues. MOT was a breeze.  Last (petrol) Modus needed new clutch at 51k, this (diesel) one is still on the original with no signs of wear as yet.

The famous 'dealer only' headlight bulb change issue can be circumvented if you have a little mechanical skill and patience (and Google!)  After shelling out £50+ when one bulb blew, I tackled the second one myself using instructions from the web.  It's a faff and a fiddle taking most of a Sunday morning but having done it once I reckon I could get that down to 45 mins or so now.  All rear bulbs are easily changed by the user - the high level brake light bulb is a bit of a mystery until you press in the right places..Google again!...then it's a 2 minute job.

I've just replaced discs/pads for the second time and I have to confess it's a bit heavy on front tyres.  Dealer servicing is expensive but now it's out of warranty I use an excellent local independent garage - saving over £300 on the cambelt service.  Now that's out of the way I intend to hang on to the car for another 6 months or so.

Would I have another..?  Well having had two Moduses and having covered 150k ish miles I can say that it's a brilliant tuition car (loved by the examiners too as it's so roomy).  I'd say the diesel 86 is the best buy for a good combination of power vs consumption.  But the newer models are even uglier.......
Maybe it's time for a change  wink
