Driving Test Success backs new student road safety awards

Driving Test Success has today taken a major step towards helping save the lives of young drivers and promoting road safety.

The UKs No.1 driving test software brand* has joined forces with the highly acclaimed Peugeot Student Road Safety Awards, to become a national sponsor and help reduce serious injuries and deaths amongst 11-18 year olds.

This unique project is the first of its kind and aims to raise awareness of the dangers on our roads amongst schoolchildren. It has the full support from the Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond, RoSPA, road safety professionals, police and MPs.

Paul Kerr, creator of the awards said: There were over 25,000 people killed or seriously injured on UK roads last year, the first annual increase since 1994. This initiative has been developed to focus students to the dangers on the road. It has been a long road getting to this point but I am very proud and grateful to have won backing from Driving Test Success.

Pauls son was just 17 when he was killed in a traffic collision involving an 18-year-old driver who had passed his test only a fortnight earlier. The devoted dad was determined that his sons death would not be in vain and after years of campaigning and lobbying, has finally won parliamentary backing for the launch of the Student Road Safety Awards.

About the Awards

The competition is free to enter and is split into two stages. The first stage is based on the 38 BBC local radio station areas across England. Students will be encouraged to work as a team and think outside the box to create unique projects that are suitable for their age group and area.

A panel of judges will select the winning project from each of the 38 areas. The winners will then go on to the finals which will be held in April next year, where students will present their projects to a panel of road safety experts. Not only are there some top prizes up for grabs, but winning entries will also be submitted to the Department for Transport (DfT) as possible future road safety campaigns.

Craig Johnson, Managing Director of Focus Multimedia, the publisher of Driving Test Success commented, We have always taken our responsibility of educating future road users extremely seriously. We work very closely with leading road safety professionals to ensure that all our learner driver products contain the very latest tools and resources a young driver needs to develop the skills needed to stay safe on our roads.

We are proud to be working alongside Paul. He is such a dedicated and inspirational individual, and we hope that our partnership may one day help to prevent serious injury or even save the life of a young driver.

Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond, said: This is a very exciting and hugely important road safety initiative.  Young people are our future drivers and I believe that empowering them with a sense of responsibility from an early age, will help drive down fatalities and serious injuries on UK roads. I am confident that this scheme has the potential to be a great success and I wish all who enter it the best of luck.
