Re: round the back

Hi Skip,
I think its because its easier for the pup to see approaching traffic and for the traffic to see them.

Re: round the back

But if they approach from the rear then they have their back to the traffic as they walk up to the drivers door.  If they go from pass door to the drivers door via the front then they are facing the direction of traffic on their side of the road.

Just a thought.

But they do!  Motor bikes and cars can emerge from anywhere, sometimes from out of grids (or so it seems  wink ) so it's best that they face oncoming traffic.

I was praised on my part 3 for telling SE to walk around the BACK of the car. Got pst 1. Scored a 5.

Ive always told my pupils this..because, the height of the car obscures the person walking in front of it..but walking behind they can be seen clearly.

Why is either way more dangerous than the other?

Re: round the back

Hi all,

The reason for walking round the back when changing seats has already been stated above . . . it's so that the view oncoming drivers have of you isn't obscured by the car.

Not gonna get into an argument over this one, just telling you what several SE's subscribe to.

If you get pst 1 or 2 and find yourself having to change seats, remember to tell the SE a couple of things:

1. Tell them to check the nearside door mirror and blind spot before opening the door (opening a car door causing injury is a criminal offence, so get a grip from the start)

2. Tell them to walk round the back of the car, not the front, for the reasons above.

Like I said, not gonna argue about this, but there are SE's who will be none too pleased if you tell them (or let them) walk round the front.

Anyway, you won't be marked down for asking them to walk round the back, so why risk being marked down for letting them walk round the front?

cheers all,

Dave H

Re: round the back

i was taught to make sure they walk round the back of the car so oncoming traffic has a much better view of them. its what i make sure i do on every seat changing lesson. i also ask them where they're going to look before opening the door as dash has said above. i dont wanna lose my door like another bsm instructor in bath   or batter someone with it either lol

Re: round the back

Many, many, eminently qualified ADIs and road safety experts with decades of very high quality experience would never countenance anyone walking around the back of vehicles when approaching to enter them... People who would do this have their eyes to the front, and any unexpected fast approaching vehicle roaring up from behind would expose them to mortal danger. Walking from the front allows constant eye contact with anything racing up behind the car, and give the option to step back in front of the car for safety.

When exiting cars from the off side people should then walk to the rear so as to have clear view up the road from where other vehicles would approach.. Again it's all about having eye contact with the hazards until they get to safety.

How many thousands of wing mirrors have you seen hanging off cars during your lessons / driving??? Why have they been damaged ???

And having myself seen the result of a teenage girl completely squashed in a crash of this nature, it is not a pleasant sight.

Experts, real experts, who I have met during the past 13 years as an ADI, and previously in my former life, are/were far more qualified to speak authoritively on this particular subject than a few ill-informed pontificating SE who might have been 5 minute PDI wonders ripping off the public just a few years ago before jumping ship to the yellow jacket brigade.. They need retraining immediately if they hold the views as claimed, and I am writing to advise Gary Austin accordingly.

Re: round the back

I have to laugh at this thread. lol

Is anybody telling me that you cannot judge whether you have enough time to walk a few feet, open a door, sit down and close the door before a vehicle reaches your vehicle??
I think there are too many 'road safety experts' with too much time on their hands.
Honestly now. You are coming back from the cinema (or whatever) and your car is parked on the street in front of you. Do you really walk all the way around the vehicle to get to the driver's door?  :? Hmmmmmmmmmm

Airmiles  These ill informed "yellow jacket" brigade[ D/E] pass/fail our pupils. those they fail probably deserve to, unless you sit on every test you don't know what happens on the day, I have sat on many test's but i prefer a cuppa and a chat and leave my well prepared pupils to do the business, those who pass, we appreciate the d/e doing his/her job even if you feel that the pupil was "lucky" to pass. But imprtantly these ill informed "yellow jacket " brigade [S/E] put us and keep us on the road, i wonder do your pupils detect this "ill feeling" that appears in your post. In relation to door opening and approaching the car either front or rear gives you poor obs at some point, as a experienced, well informed ADI since 1984 i if u pardon the expression use the "rear" method never had a problem from an examiner .

Re: round the back

The Pearson company which conducts driver theory testing on behalf of the DSA, publish a superb learning to drive manual which states categorically that the safest method to follow when preparing to enter a car is to approach from the front. The procedure is fully illustrated on page 41, complete with colour photograph and text. Great book. Very highly recommended.

Those '' rear enders '' among you care to change your minds ?

If '' front ending '' is the prefered method of DSA's Theory company, it stands to reason that it should be taught at the practical level of training.

Or is the world going completely bonkers  :?:

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm no.

I shall continue with 'rear ending' because that is what my trainer trained me to do and how I passed my part III. So a van driver must stick his head out 'blindly' from behind the front of his van only for a bus to take it off and this is safer. Okay lol  lol  lol

I'm with Django.

As soon as the Pearson company start testing people for part 3, I'll consider it.

I remain to be convinced that changing seats by going round the front is any safer, all I know is that there are a number of SE's who believe it safer to go round the back, so why risk it on your part 3?

You will not be penalised for asking them to go round the back of the car, but you do run the risk of being tested by an SE who might not be happy with you letting them go the front way.

Many SE's have been ADI's, then examiners, for years. They will probably have been trained to go round the back and will expect this to be done on the test.

If you fail part 3 in part because of this, you won't really care too much about which way is right.  Hence my comment about not wanting to argue. What's the point in taking the risk?

There's probably many good reasons for doing it either way, although I have to admit, I'm struggling to think of any advantages at all of going round the front. Django's comments are very much to the point.

Cheers

No intention of changing my view's , that's what i like about this vocation/occupation/job call it whatever u want, the choice of who's right or who's wrong. I pass a bus everyday with MARS on the front but he won't sell me a ticket.

Re: round the back

Just to throw a whole new dimension into this debate - how would your decision to walk arounb back/front be affected if parked on a hill?

This could affect safety, eg. if handbrake failed, and view, with the better view obtained from the higher vantage point.  big_smile

Re: round the back

Some of you guys have forgotten the Highway Code. Page 5.

Until you are inside your car, you are a pedestrian.

Do not walk with your back to the traffic.

HWC is an excellent read.

It is worth buying a copy.

Re: round the back

Forgive me if I am technically incorrect but, surely the answer to this question is really contained in the area of risk assessment based on the conditions prevailing, ie. traffic etc. I would not step into the road if there was traffic flowing from either direction by the front or rear method, I would wait until there was a safe gap. However, having driven LGV for many years I have found that to approach from the rear (facing oncoming traffic) is far safer, for both self and others and when leaving the vehicle, going round the front, the shortest route and again the safest. If on the day it was explained why your decision to go from the front/rear was explained then all would be ok depending on the circumstances.
Do we really get into the car when there is traffic passing? Just a thought.

Re: round the back

See what I mean? Uphill/Downhill, Pedestrians til we get in car?. Isn't freedom of speech great, I have tried this several times today and i can't get into my Micra "bum "first so i have my back to traffic, therefore i only enter the car when safe ie no traffic , as i am 18st and 6ft 2 ins my sunroof is unsuitable for entering my car.So the end result is safety first.

Re: round the back

How about approach from the front (facing on-coming traffic) and leave round the back (again, facing on-coming traffic).
Or, get in the passenger side and slide across  lol
