phase 2 confusion

I have phase 1 straight in my head, how to deal with the briefing etc, but when it comes to Phase 2 i seem to lose track,
i know that it should just be a few questions, but not sure where to start.
The examiner gives a word picture and tells me that i need to train him on it.
do i then say "this is what i will be training you on today" and then
would i just ask him questions about that topic to find out his understanding?

sorry if it sounds daft, but getting myself very confused here. hmm
any help or advise would be appreciated.
thanks

Re: phase 2 confusion

Just say I remember from our conversation  on the phone that you needed to work on........ Or I had a chat with your usual instructor and he said you need to do some development work on....... Remember it is only to get things going and is not that important really but is more natural for you to begin with something like this.

Then Q&A make sure you listen to his answers VERY carefully they often give very good clues if you can pick them up

Good luck Cliff

Re: phase 2 confusion

I think that the terms phase 1 and phase 2 confuse some PDIs. All that Phase 1 means is that the pupil has not covered the subject before so a full brief is required. All that phase 2 means is that the pupil has covered the subject of the lesson before, so full instruction is not usually required, Introduce yourself say that you are taking over from their usual instructor and just ask a couple of questions to determine the 'pupils' understanding of the subject. For example if the phase 2 subject was 'approaching junctions', you could ask the 'pupil' their understanding of MSPSL and positioning.

Re: phase 2 confusion

All that phase 2 means is that the pupil has covered the subject of the lesson before, so full instruction is not usually required

There are a couple of exceptions to this: Parrallel Park and Progress Hesitancy and Position although the latter will have been used within other subjects.

Re: phase 2 confusion

Phase 2 or the 2nd part of the Part 3 test is about the PDI instructing a trained novice or a full licence holder, so the 'pupil' will have had some previous experience/knowledge of the given subject/s.

Your job is to identify and deal with any weakness within the subject area. You are looking to identify any 'underlying problems' in 2 ways; firstly by testing the 'pupil's' knowledge through selective Q & A, and secondly by means of an on-road assessment.

Once you have identified any weaknesses you can then set about analyzing them (why are they happening - the root cause) and offering a constructive solution.

As Cliff has stated the parallel park maybe a new subject that has not previously been dealt with, however it appears as a phase 2 subject because the majority of skills required to complete this exercise are already known to the pupil e.g. they should have experience and knowledge of how to control the car slowly and what observations to take etc. the only new element is a method for parking.

Care should be taken when dealing with the full licence  holder for this subject as it may not always be appropriate to give a briefing if the parking exercise is purely problematic. It is therefore vitally important that the PDI listens to the pen picture given by the examiner.
Progress and hesitancy is simply a problematic phase 2 subject (you wouldn't go out to teach these elements, well hopefully not big_smile  big_smile )

Phase 2 should be fairly straight forward if approaching the correct manner with an understanding of the principles and requirements of this part of the test.
