just a quickie!

Hi all,

Is it possible for the pupil to write the ID instructions down on paper and stick them to the dashboard, so she can glance at them and knows where she is going. Just to save asking the ex for confirmation on each junction and getting them annoyed.

Thanks.

M6

Re: just a quickie!

If the pupil were to do that it would defeat the object of that part of the test me thinks!

They would have to take their eyes off the road and all the pupil has to do is remember each direction and as they can ask if they
need to it would show they can retain information, as they should be up to test standard they would have remembered how to drive.

YOU can ofcourse train them to do ID, since 2003 I have been teaching ID towards the end of the lesson when they get near test standard and I have not come across anyone that has had any problems.

Re: just a quickie!

I believe there is a thread on this somewhere just as the ID came into force and the answer is pretty much as Barry has said, it would be a distraction by taking eyes off the road.
ID is not a memory test, if a candidate forgets all they have to do is ask.  I recommend my pupils to remember at least 2 of the turns and if they cannot remember after that then ask... not been a problem so far.

Re: just a quickie!

I know where you are coming from, but is asking the ex for confirmation of each junction if they can't remember not defeating the object of the ID? The girl just gets flustered when trying remember where to go, and suffers from a little dyslexia.

We have tried with writing it down and sticking it over the radio and her eyes are off the road for a second or two, about the equivelant of being able to read a text message (joke!) or changing the channel on the radio, and she copes well when doing it this way.

I always bring ID in once they are able to do junctions without much help so yes I do train them for it, but every now and again, the odd pupil will struggle with it. I have told her that if she can't remember and struggles either ask the ex or go where she feels right and as long as she does the right routines, the ex is just gonna have to get the A to Z out!

Thanks

Re: just a quickie!

I thought i would put it to an examiner today whilst waiting for a test to return.

His answer: Not a problem with writing the directions down and sticking them on the dash, or they can keep the diagram of the directions on the lap of the examiner so they can look across when they want to know the next direction, or just ask for confirmation.

I wonder what the next examiner will say when i ask them, no doubt a totally different answer.

Perhaps you should get it in writing from someone at the head of the DSA and keep that letter with you just incase they say NO.

Just a thought.

On the move, no. Safely parked up at the side of the road, yes. Is that not taught? Why make it difficult for the novice driver?

Hi,

You may like to print off the e-mail below as you know I specialise in teaching the elderly, learning difficulties and the disabled and was involved in the trials.

Independent driving as tested has caused some of my pupils problems even though they could drive independently 25 miles to the TC and return via another route, and you will see nearly a month AFTER ID was introduced I finally got written confirmation from Sandra Dodson (Deputy Chief Examiner) The DSA that hand written notes were acceptable but I have had problems with some examiners not being aware that "Post It Notes" were permitted on test.

Generally my clients prefer to use turns at junctions as their conditions impede their reading skills so they use a form of shorthand as below

O > 3rd exit

< +

TL (Traffic Lights) >

This allows them to "refresh" their memory without appearing stupid by constantly asking for confirmation of the route and they can prepare themselves on the approach confident they know where they should be going.

Subject: Coping strategies

Hello Peter

It was good to talk.  Just to confirm some of the issues we discussed.

Firstly, my apologies for not recognising what you meant by ‘shopping lists’ and yes it is perfectly acceptable for someone to jot down directions on a post-it note and stick it to the dashboard. What we always emphasise (and this is obvious to you) is that any coping strategy should not be a distraction causing loss of control, or have negative road safety impact which would be then be assessed appropriately (on a par perhaps with looking down at gears and losing control).

I must say it was interesting to hear of the additional elements you introduce into your lesson plans, such as on Pass Plus simulating getting lost etc.  And I think your teaching of how to cope with sat nav is excellent, especially when you know your pupil will be using sat nav immediately post test. Although we don’t presently allow sat nav, as with all technological advancement we are constantly reviewing and responding.  Hence, our latest decision to allow on test cars that are fitted with solely electronic handbrake, which may be useful for some of your pupils.

I agree we (well mainly me) can seem to be guilty of showing a sort of troglodyte nervousness about modern gadgetry.  I will discuss with Trevor the use of iphone mapping (or equivalent) to obtain a ‘pre-drive’ aerial view of the verbal directions route for those candidates who have declared a special need and find it a helpful coping strategy. I think if this was acceptable (and I’m not saying it will be) we would have to stress that it must be looked at and then put away before moving off.  And I know you agree.

I was also interested in how there can be advantage in telling some candidates in advance what signs they will be required to follow.  Although, it’s debatable as acceptable for all. For some giving them the information in advance may add confusion, for others it may help.  And, of course, couldn’t be applied in multiple on the move, whereas single sign instruction can be.  Although (and this depends on the signage available and road layouts) on some routes examiners do say ‘we are following the signs to Airport and city centre’, or similar.  As you say, I may not appreciate quite how difficult communication is for some; say those with Asperger’s for instance. But don’t forget their special need can be declared and you can be there too – and you can explain to the examiner what would help Mary or Fred overcome their specific difficulties.  As you said the examiners are very helpful.

Of course, independent driving is very new and like most things will evolve and change as it grows. In fact, it was heartening to hear you say that in the main your pupils are coping well and that you feel the examiners may be being just a tad over helpful, especially in ensuring no one gets lost!

I’ll get back to you about the iphone as soon as I can.

In the meantime - you take care out there.

Regards
Sandra Dodson

Unfortunately Trevor refused the use of a Smart Phone to view the route proposed to be travelled so the candidate could gauge distances between junctions and see if there was a landmark (e.g. Supermarket/Church/School) they could use to reassure themselves they were still on route and I have used this technology myself when I had got very close to my destination but the Sat Nav failed to find a route to it.

Re: just a quickie!

No problem making notes, I sorted this out with DSA before the start of ID. The pupil needs to be told to use common sense with it, in other word only glance at the note  when safe to do so. They could even pull up in a safe place to check the note, after all it's what we all did before sat nav appeared, I've pulled up many times to check the AtoZ. This is what real life driving is about.
