Why do we drive 1 metre from the kerb?

Hi folks

I'm a PDI, having just started training pupils on a pink licencse.  And I find myself not really agreeing with the well accepted maxim of "Drive approx 1 metre from the kerb".

A) pupils find it a bit difficult to judge a metre

B) in many residential areas a metre puts you too close to the centre line and so i'm constantly changing my instruction to  "...just less than a metre"

C) I think a metre is no longer quoted in the latest "Essential Skills" book.  It now quotes the normal driving position to be   "...well to the left".

So, wouldn't it add more value to tell learners that the general approach for most roads should be to drive in  "the centre of your lane".  Seems to kill far more birds with one stone......  in that

a) it's seems more truthfull to me

b) the instructor doesn't need to keep qualiying it by saying "now this roads' a bit narrower, so reduce that metre to 3/4

c) granted, wide roads would be the exception and would demand that the instructed qualified this rule.  However, wide roads are not the norm.

d) it makes things consistent with the "lanes in dual carriageway" rule, i.e. Essential Skills states "centre of your lane"

Any ADIs with opinions on this?

Re: Why do we drive 1 metre from the kerb?

Never teach one metre, always teach centre of our half of the road.

On some roads this will be a metre on others it will be half that or double that.

Dependand upon oncoming traffic it might be best to be close to the kerb, maximising the gap from oncoming traffic, they might move out towards you, the kerb won't!

For PST purposes using the 1 metre rule enables you to find a generaly 'useful' position for the SE who refuses to drive in the right spot, for real learners it is of little use.

Don't confuse teaching people to drive with passing part 3, they are two different animals

Thanks for the response.  Delighted.  I guess being a PDI, you never feel 100% confident in your gut feeling....  so it's good to get a wee bit validation from a proper ADI.

Re: Why do we drive 1 metre from the kerb?

Hi paul
Just keep it simple! drive 1 metre away and adjust in to centre of your lane on narrower roads. Be carefull as its not really okay to drive 2 metres from kerb just because road is wider.

For example on a very wide road in a 30 keeping to 30 you want to be as close to the left as is safe, cause you will probably be overtaken.

Re: Why do we drive 1 metre from the kerb?

It's an excellent start to your training that your already questioning what you've been taught.

The main reason we still have what you call "the well accepted maxim" (not everybody agrees with it by the way wink) is that not enough people think like you. It's just lazy training from lazy trainers that gets passed on down the line. Why train people properly when you can get £3,000 for reciting the same old rubbish all the time. Trouble is not enough people ask why, they just fall for the sales pitch. Read any thread that queries an "accepted maxim" and somebody will chirp in with "well my trainer told me.....". Load of old b0ll0cks or only half the story most of the time.

The origin of 1 metre from the kerb by the way is to do with the standard width of a standard design single carriagway road being 8 metres. Average car width is taken as 2 metres. Being one metre from kerb gives one metre clearance from centre line. or in English middle of the lane wink

Thanks folks.  Good to get a bit of history on the 1 metre rule too.

Re: Why do we drive 1 metre from the kerb?

Hi
The 1 metre rule is a guideline. And as with most guidelines needs to be used with a little common sense. The positioning of the vehicle from the kerb is a safety margin from pedestrians, the kerb itself and the debris that may collect there; the width of the road also needs to be considered as does the relative dangers from the nearside and the situation ahead when considering an appropriate position for the vehicle.
The speed phase of the system is also closely related to positioning phase and there is often a trade off between the two e.g the higher the speed when passing a hazard the wider the safety margin, if this is not possible due to the road and traffic conditions, then the speed must be reduced to compensate for the narrower safety margin.
My point here is that general guidelines are necessary when dealing with most subjects, however they need to be used flexibly and thoughtfully with the ultimate objective in mind; is it safe, is it convenient and am I meeting with other expectations!!
It is good to question black and white statements you should always look to find the underlying reasons behind a suggested method and if it doesn't make sense question it further. Doing this during your training will give you an excellent grounding for your instructor training. Good luck

Re: Why do we drive 1 metre from the kerb?

It is good to see you questioning what you are teaching Paul but, surely, the time to have been questioning it was on your part 2?  Now you are on to part 3 it is your training methods that you should be concentrating on - the subject matter you are putting across should have been understood during part 2.
