PST - EMERGING & LEFT AND RIGHT TURNS...

Hi all,

If you have Emerging or L/R turns on your phase one, I'm aware that the SE drives from the test centre to where the work is to be done.  However, surely the driving skills of the role that he'll be playing are gonna be pretty crap!  Does this mean that I have to tell him exactly what to do regarding every part of his drive or just concentrate on the pst?

Also, will the briefs be covered in the test centre?  In the real world, you wouldn't get a student to drive on main roads after only covering Move off and stop?????  I is confused.com!!!

Any help would be rippa!

Thanks,

J

Re: PST - EMERGING & LEFT AND RIGHT TURNS...

i got this PST on my test.

The brief is done at the test center. All you have to ask when approaching a roundabout/ped crossing etc is ask "have you dealt with them before?" the SE will reply usually "yes" but can say "no" and all you do is talkthrough, which is what you would do with a pupil(talkthrough not ask!) but don't be focused on it and only deal with faults as they occur but make sure most of your teaching is the PST.

Re: PST - EMERGING & LEFT AND RIGHT TURNS...

Would it be safe to ask at the point you are approaching a serious potential hazard if they had delbt with them before? I would do that at the very start in briefing!

Your trainer should have explained this! In terms of time, the SE is very likely to go straight into role from the test centre, they should do all the other stuff (r/bouts, ped xings etc...) just right, but their emerging will be horrific!

Think about what it says on the Part 3 MARKING sheet for that subject... this will help!

how can you brief for a serious hazard? you don't know what route they are going to take you on and with a real learner you talkthrough any hazards. all your briefing at the test center will consit of is how emerging left/right.

Re: PST - EMERGING & LEFT AND RIGHT TURNS...

You should ask the examiner out of role the first few turns to plan your initial instruction and route, you wouldnt take a pupil out and let them direct you so dont do it here! determine in the recap the level of instruction to be given for other subjects. Simply ask the pupil briefly which of the other early subjects are covered already and gauge guided/Prompted/Independant. Easy to gauge how much help is required.
Dont complicate things its really very simple you wouldnt let a pupil drive without knowing what they have at least covered before, its just there isnt time to go into detail here.

On junctions lesson enquire particularly about Meet/Clearance, roundabouts, crossings.Easy to link into mspsl .
Be ready to offer the appropiate help if required in these areas. Treat crossroads as T junctions and give instruction on approaching junctions also to begin and decrease as lesson continues.

Re: PST - EMERGING & LEFT AND RIGHT TURNS...

On all the PST sheets just keep too to the core subject you will only have 30 min's on each part so just ask what driving they have done out side of there driving lessons as well as with there instructor, while your on your way to the training area just check they know how to do roundabouts or duel carrageways ect, just remember to check around you before you leave the test centre if it is they are driving in case theres any think you need to point out to them.

GOOD LUCK

Re: PST - EMERGING & LEFT AND RIGHT TURNS...

I had both those topics on my tests.

For junctions L/R the SE actually came out of role and said he can emerge ok as I kept preventing him from joining the main road coz I wasnt happy with his observations and attempted to talk him through the emerge.  He told me to just let him get on with it so we can deal with the subject of the lesson.

On the T junctions/emerge pst He started to display faults common to emerging whilst dealing with major to minor junctions so I addressed those as they occured (coasting and msm errors).
