Rear ended.

On a lesson yesterday, travelling at approx 20mph on an average road with cars parked on the left, a 4X4 driver pulled up and parked.
I brought the incident to my pupils attention and asked what might happen.
"Door might open", pupil replies as he checked his mirrors.
Sure enough,  as we got parallel to the parked car before the 4X4 the driver opens the door fully, my pupil brakes stiffly , but under full control, and comes to a stop about a foot from the woman driver who had just got a leg out of the vehicle.
young lad driving daddys car behind us wasnt so observant and rammed us, at about 10 mph contact speed.
As I get out the car, the 4X4 driver is looking rather sheepish as she steps to rear of her vehicle. i thanked her very much for being so considerate, before she gathered up her brood from the other side of the car and walked off into a house.

Sadly, the driver of the car behind will be deemed ENTIRELY at fault, as my pupil stopped correctly, and under full control to an emergency situation. My pupils anticipation saved a life at the expense of a bit of plastic moulding and a car bonnet.

well done to my pupil, bad luck and a lesson learned for the yound driver behind, and i hope the mother in the 4X4 considers herself EXTREMELY lucky my pupil was in front of, and not behind the other driver. Of course she can walk away scot free even though she was the main contributor to the incident.

Lifes a $$//@.................. and so are many 4X4 drivers.

Re: Rear ended.

totally O/T but a bit of humour maybe - i had a dream last night that for some reason i was lying in a road tangled up in wires or something and got run over by a female in a 4X4  yikes Luckily for me it was a supertruck-type 4X4 cos i went between the 2 sets of wheels and came out totally unscathed  big_smile big_smile big_smile

I think his point is that 4x4 drivers tend to be more inconsiderate, selfish ****** who think they own the road even more than the average driver, I would tend to agree.

Sorry had a bad experience with two 4x4 drivers today on the same lesson.

Can the 4x4 driver not be charged with contributing to the accident?

Re: Rear ended.

Well i drive a 4x4, am an adi, ex police and i can tell you i am not inconsiderate or selfish thanks. I am a member of 4 offroad clubs of which i can vouch for most of the drivers being more than considerate. We don't just drive but put time and effort into repairing rights of way, assisting events where 4x4's are needed for paramedics etc and use the vehicles for the very purpose they were intended. It really pi@@Es me off when people can be so ANAL as to just tar people with the same brush. You don't like 4x4's? fine. I don't like caravan owners, dog owners who let their dogs turd every where and not clean it up and men with beards, but you know i guess that once you get to know some of these people i bet they are not too bad all in all. So just cos you see someone driving a vehicle that's big for whatever their reason is for doing so give them a chance before labelling.

Re: Rear ended.

Adi,  chill dude smile
I didnt say ALL 4x4 drivers ;-)

I'll make a differential.
Chelsea tractor drivers as opposed to off roaders.   Happier now?

The point was, she was just 1 of many 100's if not 1000's of modern parents of spoilt brats, with excess credit available and who buy over priced and under designed road going 4x4's that have never had a splat of mud on the paint work....ever. These parents seem to buy such ill advised purchases in the belief that they, and little dorothy and timothy will stay safe....all the while totally oblivious to the mayhem, congestion and down right foolhardy driving style they have developed because the cocoon effect of driving a vehicle of that type brings.

For me, the Chelsea Tractor is a major contribution to road danger. They are over powered, under performing bulks of excess metal and rubber wholly unsuitable for the purposes for which they have been purchased,   city driving. this is based on  personal experiences.

Porsche, Mercedes, Volvo etc etc etc are all guilty of building inappropriate vehicles for a market that should never exist.

Land Rovers and other  WORKING vehicles designed and used for the rural environment are a totally different kettle of fish.  They have been designed for a purpose, and  used for that purpose are of great benifit.

Re: Rear ended.

Charges brought by whom? the police are totally ineffective in pursuing such drivers, unless it is a KSI.

A shooting apparently occured just around the corner from where i live whilst i was out of town.I know that because a large board asking for witnesses and information has appeared in the next road from me. i asked a few neighbours about it. None knew anything about it. no door knocks from the police, no adverse Police prescence recently, in fact, the only thing suggesting the event occurred was this notice appearing.  The 5th such board in as many months.
do we see police on our street? no. do we see community support officers on our street?  no. do we have ANY authoritive figures that are there to assist the local tax payers? Well, we do have the swoop squad.  the name i give to the 2 guys in a little van that jump out and slap a ticket on any car that goes 30 seconds over the allotted parking time.  Once the ticket is slapped on the screen (ticket already printed from inside the van that was parked around the corner) a photo quickly taken and a dash back to the van as it pulls away with engine screaming in 1st gear.
Oh, and I live in the quiet part of town.

I remember when  we had the local bobby, either walking or driving his escort van or allegro panda around the village.
He was replaced by 2 officers in a fiesta, never the pair would seperate. Presumably for each others safety.
now I see 10-12 officers in transit vans. IF they do turn up to an incident, it will be 2 transit van loads of them. i'm guessing just in case the 1st van load cant manage to cope with the gobby teenager that "resists" arrest by asking for his mother to be present, the other van load can go and visit the mother to inform her of her sons activities.  Who knows what risks she'd pose if only 2 officers turned up.

So, theres a bit of my politics.  I dislike 4x4 drivers and ineffective policing.

NEXT subject please...

Re: Rear ended.

Don't worry, i am chilled dimmy.

The thing is, most people on this forum know what it's like to have everyone against you just because of the vehicle you drive, ie a learner car. You get abuse from the impatient, residents and generally people who just have the intelligence of a digestive biscuit, who for what ever reason think that an L plate means that they have to get past at any cost. These biscuit brained people do this on a subconsious instinct embedded in them from an unknown source.

So when you do what i do, you get the same flak, only this time it's from ramblers, greenies and another type of biscuit brained, let's say, malted milk, who see a 4x4 and decide that it means the driver is crap and has a complete disregard for the law, rules and life itself. This instinct comes from the 'media', who inject society with misinformed information for what ever is trendy news at the time.

I don't give anyone grief, i take each person/driver for what they are. I see alot of bad driving from old people but don't then decide that anyone over the age of 60 shouldn't be on the road. (no offence to anyone over the age of 60, you still have a few miles left in the tank! i'm not far off myself). I see lots of boyracers doing bad, but realise that there are those who have customised cars that are actually very considerate.

My main point is, it's important to look more at the driver as the individual than the vehicle. The vehicle is a machine, it's the person behind the wheel that get's it to do what it does.

Re: Rear ended.

Like ADI I quite often drive Land Rovers, and I have to say that most people are nice to me in it, and most Land Rover (defender) drivers are pretty good and considerate - they tend to be people with at least a little common sense even if their actual driving is not perfect.

However, unlike ADI I agree with Dimmy, that the majority of urban 4x4 drivers have chosen those vehicles for one of 2 reasons - either as a statement about themselves, or because they are nervous. We all know how dangerous nervous drivers can be in a car - put them in a 3 tonne truck and they become a terror. When it comes to the kind of person who chooses a 4x4 as a statement about themselves - that worries me just as much - it suggests selfishness, arrogance and a bullying mentality - and we see this so often that it has become a stereotype.

All we have to do is remember that there is an exception to every rule - there are some 4x4 drivers out there like ADI and Luchell's parents who are considerate drivers.
