Motorhomes

Hiya all

I know it is Illegal to have passengers in a caravan when you are towing it, but what is the law on this where motor homes are concerned?

Most motor homes only have two seats in the front, so does that mean passengers are free to be in and use the accommodation part of the motorhome whilst the vehicle is in motion? If that is the case, it's bit dangerous isn't it?

Cheers

Jon

Re: Motorhomes

The rear seats can be set so as to carry passengers too, and are now fitted with seat belts as with a van or mini bus.  Thing is though the majority of them are only two berth, and so mostly only two travel in them.

They may carry as many passengers as there are seat belts for.

Wisest are they that know they know nothing

Re: Motorhomes

Hi,
Just seen this so had a dig around this link has some interesting points on the seatbelt topic.

http://www.ukmotorhomes.net/faqs.shtml

Unfortunately could not find any other references to the points that are made but it is the response of Department of Transport so perhaps it can be relied on.

Key points are

Seat belts must be worn if fitted - Seats without seatbelts can be used it is not currently illegal but the practise is not recommended.

From 2009 only seats with seat belts fitted can be used for travelling.
The only seats that do not require seatbelts from 2009 will be those seats designed for habitation use.
Side facing seats SHOULD not be fitted with seat belts as suitable performance cannot be obtained.

From 2009 , no matter the age of the motorhome if seatbelts are fitted to seats behind the driver/passenger seats then these are the only seats that can be used for travel.

Next time I speak to the brother in law I will see if he has any more details on this as he works in the industry.

Hope this helps.
