Parallel Park Signalling

Ok for this manoeuvres I get pups to signal that they are pulling up by car if there is another road user to benefit.  Then handbrake on, reverse gear to show reverse lights and cancel any signal given.  So first question is that correct or do I need to get them to signal irrespective of other road users?

Once the manoeuvre is complete our start position requires an angled start and can be quite tight.  I again get them to signal their intention to move off if it will benefit another road user.  Again the question is should I get them to signal irrespective of other road users as their view is restricted?

Look forward to confirmation or views.

Oh thank you....... I remember i used to be confused about this...... There are a lot of threads re: signalling on this forum! And it sparks debate amongst us! At the end of the day signalling, so long as it isn't confusing is useful/potenitally useful (with resticted views for example) to other road users, so the short answer is yes!

       I have been taught and therefore teach  no signal untill your car is stationary and alongside the target car, and then only signal if a car approachs from the front. The thinking behind this is if you signal prior to stopping ,other road users may assume you are stopping at the kurbside in front of ,or behind the target car. Would anyone assume that a car giving a left signal was about to stop in what could be the middle of the road? Not to say this is the only way, its just
the way I teach and no pups have had problems with it on test.

If anybody is around that will benefit  from your signal then you must apply one making sure your signal is correctly timed so not to confuse others.
As for putting  on the handbrake I teach mine to signal if it Will benefit others then once car comes to stop into reverse then handbrake and  then signal off if one has been applyed that way reverse lights are  on a couple of seconds early showing are intentions to cars behind.

As you draw up alonside the target vehicle, you are already signalling with your brake lights (that you are slowing down). I would re-inforce that signal with a left indication if there was anyone approaching from either ahead or behind and whilst I was still moving forward. You are, probably, going to move a little way to the left as you move into a position to start the manouevre, so you are not telling them anything incorrect. As such, both my position and signals would assist in making any other road users aware that I was doing something other than drivng along normally. I think the combination of brake lights and a left signal as a car slows alongside a parked vehicle would give most drivers a pretty good indication of what was intended.

Once stationary, maintain control of vehicle with footbrake applied, select reverse gear and then secure car with handbrake. The left indicator should now be cancelled as it is no longer required, ie. you are no longer moving into the left and the reverse lights show your next intention.

i think i agree with most of what has been said....
once you have pulled up alongside the target car i would tell a pupil to put on a left signal only if there was an approaching car...no need to do so if a car was coming up behind you as you should be showing your reverse lights.
as for moving off once the manoeuvre has been completed...usual rules apply as it is a normal move off...ie signal to move out if theres somebody there to benefit from it.

Yes more agreement from me too!  Signal left if it will help other road users to benefit and it reinforces the reverse lights that we are parking to the left.  If no one is about, no point in signalling!

Don't know if this applies in all areas but on test in our area Examiner will always stop pupil at the side of the road first and point out object car in front that parallel park is to be done with. They will not just ask you to stop along side the next car in front as we might do on a lesson when practicing. Therefore stopping on the left by the kerb in the normal fashion ie signal if someone to benefit, don't if nobody to benefit. So having stopped by the Kerb and had object car pointed out, you are then going to move off in the normal way to pull along side the object car. As you would normally be ensuring that nothing was coming before moving off and pulling along side the object car no signal would be necessary at this point (unless somebody else like a pedestrian would benefit).

On test though, you will be pulled in behind the target car(s). unless there is a junction or bend behind you, then you will have no cars behind as you position, cos you would wait till they passed before positioning yourself. I teach to use left signal for cars approaching from front.        The difficulties really come when the pupil needs to go back out to correct. Do you right signal, then left signal again? I dont teach this but a pupil asked me and I hadn't really thought about what the correct thing should be.     Another related question is... is it legal to reverse park on a one way street?

Sounds reasonable.

One thing I would add though, if you are parking in between two cars and there is someone following I would pull up next to the gap first, until any following vehicles had passed, then move forward alongside the target vehicle.

Whilst ideas are slightly different here I think we can safely say all have a reason, and different persons assessments of situations.

I'd instruct as follows:

Approach using MSM. Signal if necessary to show intentions of pulling up along side the car. If the signal is timely and using brake lights to reinforce it does not look like you are pulling in. Reverse lights on straight away, then handbrake if necessary, remember your in the middle of the road. Its good to show brake lights to cars from behind and if they are still confused you could place a left signal on also, but once you start reversing again cancel the signal.

Move away. Signal for those you can see and those you cannot see.

Job done!

Thanks everybody for useful input and as per normal its not black and white.  Got no problem with that as so many things in driving are not.  Pupils so often want a definitive answer which we cannot give as road situations determine our approach.

So its really consider whether a signal benefits another road user. 

Will change to get into reverse first so reverse lights show and then handbrake.  The same therefore must be true for the Bay Park?

Can apply this to any manoeuvre, although would, perhaps, be cosidered too advanced by some for many learners.

I agree with Bradpitstop. I am a great believer that you only put christmas lights on at christmas and not in June. Nothing should be written in tablets of stone but all too often this seems to be the case. If and when necessary I feel. In the main I agree with what's been said.
