Learner 'bribes' to pass - Australia

NEWS.com.au, Australia - Aug 21, 2004

LEARNER drivers have been accused of offering bribes of up to $1000 to driving instructors in exchange for a driving licence.

Two South Australian driving instructors say they have been offered cash to pass students in their on-road tests.

The allegations come as a 2002 Transport SA review into driving tests, leaked to the Sunday Mail, revealed there were "commercial pressures on instructors to deliver favourable assessments".

Accurate Driving School part-owner Rose Coppola said she had been threatened by two men when she refused bribes.

"A couple of times we've had phone calls from them, offering close to $1000 for a licence and when I said no they abused me," Mrs Coppola said. "I told them, `You've got the wrong driving school'.
